RIFF, hailing from Paterson, New Jersey, best known for their scintillating performance in the film, "Lean On Me" and their early ’90s singles, "My Heart Is Failing Me", "If You’re Serious" and "Everytime My Heart Beats". Riff is among several ’90s vocal ensembles greatly influenced by classic doo wop and R&B.
This New Jersey Pop/R&B quintet formed as "The Playboys" while still in high school, gaining prominence when they sang the school song, "Fair Eastside" in "Lean on Me". Changing their name to "Riff", Kenny Kelly, Anthony Fuller, Dwayne Jones, Steven Capers, and Michael Best signed with SBK Records and released a self-titled debut.
After appearances on The Arsenio Hall Show, The Tonight Show, Soul Train- just to name a few; the band toured with LL Cool J and Vanilla Ice and then released their sophomore album, "To Whom It May Concern". EMI Records was unable to throw its full promotional muscle behind the record, perhaps because of the transition from their earlier pop-influenced sound to a harder, edgier R&B style; this began the group’s downward slide.
Riff members Anthony "Chill" Fuller, Dwayne "Stylz" Jones and Michael "Nitty Green" Best, later joined Men of Vizion, an urban quintet combined R&B basics of harmony and soul to produce a sound characteristic of ’90s R&B bands.
