In the beginning... In 1988 the band The Lumberjacks was formed, and so was the base for the band, now more active than ever, The Fucking Virgins! The unusual band name has nothing to do with virgins having intercourse (a nice thought indeed!), but the original idea came from the record label Virgin that had transformed from a punk label to a mega bucks label!!! Fuck Virgin was an often heard term, hence the name! Obviously having such a name can sometimes have an adverse effect in terms of band bookings, so every once in a while we perform under our pseudonym The Sunshine Kids..
Anyway, the formula was a simple one, put five punks in a Zaanse (dont ask its Dutch) bucket, add a few instruments, shake well and let them make one hell of a noise. The result of all this shaking was the first ever own Fucking Virgins song I Hate You.
The Fucking virgins continued to develop and quickly discovered that the element of fun often combined well with playing punk! Especially during live shows, at this time arranged by our bitch Tamara (unfortunately nowadays shes just our bitch, but we still love you!!!), there was a great deal of enthusiasm and fun in our playing. After adding a number of Dutch sing-a-long classics like Huilen Is Voor Jou Te Laat (look it up on the internet if you have an uncanny fetish for sing-a-longs in a foreign language) the audience was encouraged to join in, and they did!!! Currently the audience seems to know some of the songs better than we do!
So its punk, with a bit of rock, metal, oi, Dutch sing-a-longs, golden oldies and fun that the Fucking Virgins have to offer!
The Fucking Virgins have gone through a lot of changes in the line-up, and played, in the first few years of existence, a lot of covers. From 1998 a stable line-up was formed and more attention was paid to the Virgins own repertoire. This is most definitely a bonus and the during the live shows the Fucking Virgins have a great and varied set list, that offers great entertainment for a very diverse crowd of people.
After numerous demos on cassette a CD demo was finally recorded in 2000. Is sounded great to us, but in fact was nothing more than putting the tapes of Laat Je Oren Ontmaagden (let your ears lose their virginity) and Wat Zeg Je (what are you saying) into the computer waving the magic mouse and burning onto a CD. Add a nice cover, courtesy of Richard Beatty (who also is responsible for this website), and a new product is born! Due to the enormous interest the CD demo is still available.
The CD demo was a step towards our common goal: A proper, real, own CD. We discovered that, because of the extensive touring the, bands petty cash had grown beyond our wildest dreams, so we decided to record a CD that would be musically, graphically and production-wise, a cut above the rest! In 2002 the first CD arrived. Four days recording and five days of post-production in practice- and recording studio Jottem, mixed with some stress, alcohol, salmon sandwiches and games of football we unleashed Hardur, Snellur, Speluhhh!!! on a unsuspecting public!!! Maarten and his intern Peter were responsible for the production, and Monique Kee, Willems sister took care of the graphics. We are, having put a lot of blood, sweat, tears and money in to realizing this, really satisfied and proud of the end result. Our relatives were slightly less pleased!!! With the experience gained and respect earned by the Fucking Virgins over the years, they have had the privilege of sharing the stage with some fantastic bands. There have been two shows with the UK SUBS, this show was reviewed in the Aardschok magazine.
The Fucking Virgins have also done shows with DOA, The Nobodys, Yawp, G.O.H., Korstkjok, Ten Hut en many, many more. It really doesnt matter with who, where and when the guys of The Fucking Virgins just want to PLAY !!!!!
