As the Canadian urban music scene evolves, more and more artists are coming out of the wood works hoping to get their craft heard by the masses. Kawzee, who represents Vaughan City which is a stones throw away from Toronto, is one of those artists. Kawzee has always had a passion for hip hop and began pop-locking in the school yard in the first grade. After 12 years of growing up in the Jane and Finch area, his family decided to relocate to Vaughan. He carried his urban influences with him as he began collecting records and spinning at local house parties. It wasnt until he purchased Big Daddy Kane's "Long Live the Kane" that he even thought about rapping. He kept doing house parties and began spitting freestyles along with his sets. At one party the owner cut the party short because he got the crowd so riled up. At that moment he put DJ'ing to the back seat and concentrated on rapping. Kawzee has been rapping since 1989 and other than holding down ciphers outside of Hip Hop shows, the Eaton Centre, The Ex, The Party Centre and where ever else he would go, he never took rapping serious. He recalls, "I grew up in an era where American artists would never show up to their concerts and we'd just create our own show by rhyming in ciphers. But it aint like it used to be, you could clown a dude in a battle but it was all love in the end. Times have changed." It was only until he met up with fellow Vaughan City emcee Syntifik in 2000 that he began hitting the studio. He began recording tracks at Magomus Sounds and soon made the transition from a punchline/battle emcee to using his music to express his thoughts on his own life and life in general. He used his music as therapy as is evident in his lyrics. Since then, Kawzee has been showcased at several shows including venues such as The Guvernment, The Opera House and Style in Progress at Dundas Square. His single, "Around You" produced by Toronto's heat makers Soundsmith was a finalist in Just Entertainment's Demo battle. His yet to be released next single "What Happened" is a certified banger as he rhetorically asks about several issues in life over a high octane sampled beat. His tracks often paint a picture through clever word play and his flow changes as if an extension of the beat. His musical influences range from Guns and Roses to J-Zone to Dip Set and is displayed in the way he has fused street beats with reflective lyrics and a strong mic presence. He is REAL and prides himself on authenticity. In one of his tracks he says, "... and I ain't never stretch the truth, because the truth might bounce back at you." This in a world full of gun toting, big weight pushers this side of the 49th parallel is refreshing in itself. Kawzee's forth coming LP "Exception to the Rule" features production from Soundsmith and Tone Mason and is sure to be a Canadian classic if not a sleeper pick amongst his fellow Canadian counterparts. NOTE: all tracks are in their preliminary version and haven't been mixed properly.
