Greg Cocaine est d’abord une mise à distance du rock, ce qui permet justement d’en jouir plus librement. Là où l’on recherche avidement un produit toujours plus original, que l’on cible systématiquement pour le mettre de l’avant et l’intégrer au menu d’une culture que plusieurs s’empressent d’avaler goulûment, on peut bien concevoir que certains aient envie d’hurler, notamment le principal intéressé. On le verra faire des push-ups sur scène, se parer à l’occasion des plus beaux atours kitch et insulter d’autres musiciens soigneusement choisis pour réitérer sa position de reflet du rockeur indomptable (Éric Lapointe n’a qu’à bien se tenir). Cette mise à distance permet ainsi à Greg Cocaine d’enfin saisir le rock en dehors du système culturel et d’éviter consciencieusement d’être un hit. Ce qui réunit le groupe et ses adeptes n’est pas tant le désir du talent que la camaraderie (les Snakes d’Hochelaga) et la jouissance d’un ailleurs du punk. On peut appeler ça foutre la zone. On peut aussi réaliser que la bière est moins chère quand on la boit dans une ruelle. Si on n’est pas content, on peut ben aller chez l’yable. ================================================
Greg Cocaine offers a new take on rock, a way to truly enjoy it again. Where many avidly try to find a most original product, systematically targeted to be shown and integrated to a cultural menu that some are waiting to devour, it is understandable that one might feel the urge to scream. We’ll see G. Cocaine do push-ups on scene, occasionally wear the most kitsch apparel and insult carefully chosen musicians to maintain the image of an untameable rocker (Éric Lapointe better be prepared). This sense of irony is what allows this band to finally grasp rock outside the boundaries of a cultural system and avoid to become a hit. What brings Greg Cocaine and its enthusiasts together is not so much a desire of talent than companionship (the Hochelaga Snakes) and the appreciation of punk taken elsewhere. One may call that “foutre la zone”. One may realize that beer is cheaper when drank in a back-alley. And if one isn’t happy, one may go straight to hell.
