Kamaal Malak’s long list of accomplishments as a musician and producer directly reflects his desire to create music with integrity without regard for convention and genre. Recently, Kamaal played a major role in Hands On Atlanta Day’s Community Benefit Concert featuring some of the most talented youth in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Kamaal was brought in to produce and direct the youth as the opening act for Patti LaBelle and John Legend.Before his work with Patti LaBelle and John Legend, Kamaal was a familiar face on Los Angeles progressive, urban music scene. As the leader of his own band, Kamaal wrote, produced and independently released two original albums on which he performed all of the vocal and instrumental tracks himself. He made appearances in many of the city’s top live music venues, but chose to put most of his energy toward interacting with other creative minds in various group projects. Kamaal’s most notable success came when he returned east to Atlanta, Georgia and joined Grammy award winning music group, Arrested Development. Kamaal admits that his personal highlights, while with Arrested Development, came with the opportunities to perform with Peter Gabriel on Peter’s WOMAD Tour, Woodstock 94’, The Late Show with David Letterman and to play for Nelson Mandella in South Africa.Kamaal discovered and honed his talents in his hometown of Philadelphia, Kamaal’s lists early influences ranging from funk, jazz, rock, pop, soul, blues and gospel. He was inspired by the music of Stanley Clarke and Alphonso Johnson and exposed to the bass guitar at an early age. During this time he also began to write songs, which fueled his desire to sing and play. The opportunity came and he moved to Los Angeles. While there he pursued his career as a producer/songwriter/bassist, working with artist including Third World Lover, Donna Delory, CeCe Peniston, Chocolate Soul Genius, and Sir Jinx.Kamaal currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia where for the past several years his multimedia studio, KM Entertainment has done music, website design, graphic art, audio/video production and DVD authoring for recording artist, film and TV clients which include, MTV Real World, Fox FX Networks, Coca Cola, NBA, Urban Entertainment and TBS. When asked about the future, whether he would rather produce/compose for film, TV, Internet or New Media, the answer is, “I want to do it all.
