Scuttlebutt and Miscellany

About Me

I have a weakness for good movies and good pizza, usually together. I don't like spider legs. I know more about beer and wine than the average bear. Food is my religion. I can fold paper into animals. My feet are almost always cold. I can recite the Konami code on command. Over or under, I don't care...as long as there's toilet paper on the roll.

I spend my time being self-deprecating, self-effacing, and self-destructive. I was eliminated from my first-grade spelling bee for missing the word "rock." This has obviously left a lot of emotional scarring, as I'm now a geology major and OCD about grammar.

My Interests

reading, religious iconography, el greco, illuminated manuscripts, bosch, velasquez, caravaggio, holbein the younger, burgundian art in the 1500's, goya, surrealism, geology, drawing comics, gaming, carousing, skiing, camping/hiking, generally being a ne'er do well, alleghanian-age orogenic granite plutons

I'd like to meet:

My soul mate will put up with my quirks: my constantly cold feet, my habit of leaving chew marks in any pen laying around my apartment, my occasional need to be a complete geek, my rampant arachnophobia. They will like dirty americanos and clean socks. They will not say "that's so metal" unless they're being facetious. They will know what the word "facetious" means. They will understand the proper usage of irony.

Music:

funky basslines, beep beep boop boop video game shit, power chords, intricate elements, songs about Belgian Expressionists via accordion, gangsta rap and britney spears need not apply.

Movies:

blade runner, ferris bueller's day off, just about any john cusack film, rushmore, monty python, maverick, count of monte cristo, sleepy hollow, titan AE, boondock saints, MST3k, princess bride, justice, audrey hepburn, super troopers, old school, animal house, the saint, james bond, indiana jones, etc.

Television:

my TV gathers dust...but I used to watch a disproportionate amount of x-files.

Books:

Bronte, Dumas, Kipling, Eliot, Fitzgerald, Austen, Roald Dahl, Gaiman, Pratchett, Harry Potter books, genesis and the book of apocrypha, Bill Bryson, William Gibson, Rushdie, Frank Miller, Vonnegut, Koontz...currently reading: The Complete Handbook of Knives, Swords, and Daggers; Alcoholica Esoterica; Schott's Food and Drink Miscellany; A Briefer History of Time; Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook v3.5

Heroes:

nice people

buffalo chicken mac and cheese

Sometimes it's time to put away the multigrain and the low fat and the high fiber and stop worrying about whether I got my proper Omega-3's and antioxidants for the day. Sometimes I just need to wear ...

adventures in cheffery, round two

Since I'd never performed any Act of Chef with roasting a bird before, I decided to keep the hen part as simple as possible and do a basic herb rub. However, I determined that the blue oyster mushroom...

Being a foodie for as long as I have, it was only a matter of time before I started developing an interest in cooking.  My early efforts in the kitchen were sophomoric at best (cook pasta, sautee...
