Big Moses has been one of the best-kept secrets among the R&B, Hip Hop and Club Music aficionados – until now. He is emerging into one of the industries top producers. Big Moses stands above the shoulders of his peers in terms of sheer creative diversity in all of his productions and through the years he has acquired his own unique flavor that touches all within ears reach.
Born Moise Laporte in Nassau, Bahamas, Big Moses was raised under a strict christian rearing lead by his father who at that time was a missionary preacher. A1ong with his two brothers, three sisters and mother, they traveled throughout the country. At the age of four, he moved with his family to Brooklyn for several years, then they moved on to New Jersey which till this day is his home base.
First entering the spotlight working in his brother Danny’s studio located in East Orange, Moses learned how to use all of the equiptment on his own. “When my brother wasn’t around I would sit for hours figuring out how to use the studio equipment – and because he didn’t have a lot of time to teach me – I wound up teaching myself how to use the board and everything else I could figure out.†Before long, Moses quickly became a self-taught engineer, keyboardist and bass guitarist!! “I always loved music – I used to imagine playing with bands when songs would come on the radio by the Ojays, the Jackson 5, the Beatles, Wings and the Spinners.â€
Having a strong spiritual background in the church, Moses was saved at the age of 14 and plays many a Sunday for his congregation – who are none-the-less enthusiastic of his talent than the people dancing to his tracks in the clubs. “Because of my background, I like to keep the music I create positive and in some way be able to have some spiritual connection to the song.â€
After mastering the art of engineering, he put together his first signed recording which was with Bottom Line Records in 1993 featuring T. Soloman entitled “Beat Goes My Heat.†Excited about the posibilites, thereafter Moses began producing and collaborating with the likes of Kenny Bobien for King Street Records which brought about the culmination of a few chart-topping club hits like “Brighter Days,†and Stephanie Cooke’s 1997 hit “Holding On To Your Love.†These tracks opened many doors for Moses along with the opportunity to produce further tracks for King Street such as Michelle Ayers “Joy†in 2000 and “For You†on Bass Mental Records.
Widely sought after for his club expertiese, in 2001 Moses had the opportunity to work with superstar Mary J. Blige and co-produced her remake of “Let No Man Put Asunder†on her multi-platinum album entitled Mary. 2002 saw Moses working once again with Kenny Bobien on a new label called Soundmen on Wax which at that time dominated the club circuit with “Father†and “Blessed†as well as SuSu Bobien’s “Can’t Keep It To Myself†and Ambrosia’s “Believe In Me†– all of which had the Big Moses’ stamp on them.
Big Moses has been blessed to be singled out of the host of so many other producers, and has been afforded the opportunity to remix and produce for both major and independent labels such as Sony, King Street Sounds, Funky Soul, Easy Street Soundmen on Wax, Jellybean Soul and Sony UK, etc. Highly respected among his peers, he has recorded and produced many other top-billing singers such as Tonni Smith, Dawn Tallman, Tony Humphries, Josh Milan, Fat Joe and the Terror Squad, Das Efx, 702, Barbara Tucker, Kevin Hedge, George Benson, Malik Pendlton, Jaheim, Joe, Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill – just to name a few.
In 2004 Big Moses gave us “Deep Inside†and “Rain Clouds†by Sir Isaac and “You Belong to Me†by Kenny Bobien released on Big Moe Records. Over the past decade Moses has spawned many hits on Billboard’s Dance charts like “You are Why†in march of 2007 on slag records wich topped the billboard charts. Most recently, he is working with Mark Sadane and has just formed his new record label entitled Musa Recordings and is ready to drop his first single entitled “Gave me love†by Sir Isaac as well as working with new talent -- putting together an awesome artist roster. “I’m excited about my new label and the prospects of working with so many more talented artists. I have truly been blessed.â€
Down-to-earth, good humored, layed-back and an absolute pleasure to work with can be said of Big Moses. He comes up with such innovative, ground-breaking beats that gets them club kids on the dance floor every time!
