The Play My String THANG

About Me

www.mizar6.net
It's simple. It all got started with a notorious guestbook, St. Al's Under The Banyan Trees With Steely Dan . It's known as the Yellow and has a cyberhistory of its own, like any other community existing in the realms of computer processed communication. Some folks actually meet up for concerts, festivities, holidays and other gatherings. Some stay distant close friends. Some make compilation discs of music.
The Play My String THANG originates from 1984 and developed by chance and serendipity in the following years. Like ten years after writing the lyrics of Symphony's Blues , i found the music to it, instant ready on a tape from musician/drummer Joost Postmes who was hindered by a writer's block; all i did was tune in with a melody and sing the words. We then hooked up in a prolific creative spell and produced like 40 songs in a row.
All of these songs (except Out of Line* and the GarageBand Duet**) presented here are like demo versions, rough takes and unfinished ideas. I Remember Your Name was the first song i wrote using a tape with music from others. It was the first song that met my own standard in a style i felt comfortable with. It was recorded in 1993 and for the Banyan Trees compilation disc (Technicolor Motorhome, produced by JayDubz/Casellastudio) i dubbed my own voice in 2000. There's something extremely attractive about using simple means to justify an even simpler goal. F U N! But i will admit i'd like to hear this song properly sung, arranged and recorded by someone other than me, of course!
Thanks to MySpace, i found Carl/Cozmovox (actually, i found him because of one of his older projects, Trick Von Schmidt) who's going to arrange I Remember Your Name. We'll keep you posted...
I Remember Your Name: Peter "Tekkie" Titihalawa and Coen van Dam
Maastricht (the Netherlands)

Symphony's Blues was chosen for Steely Knives (the third guestbook CD, produced by Schwinn aka Brett Barney) and was recorded in Stockholm, after a 2 hour flight, in a 2 hour session and in just 2 takes. You can hear that one at Last.FM .
Symphony's Blues: Arranged by Clas Lundkvist and Steadysession
Stockholm (Sweden)

*The song Out of Line has a sample of Symphony's Blues and is taken from Steadysession's debut album Biomusicology which was released in 2003. You can read more about his projects and Yardnoize on their own MySpace sites.
**The GarageBand Duet is actually a song taken from the Mark Sholtez debut album 'Real Street'. Falling is a wonderful composition by this young Australian (of Dutch descent) singer-songwriter/crooner, introduced to me by Rob Mounsey, who was interviewed for Mizar5. Mounsey, at the time, was working on Mark's album. An interview with Mark Sholtez has been published in All About Jazz , December the 5th in 2007. I really like the song Falling a lot and before i knew it, i was messing about with GarageBand and singing along. Kind of like the old taperecorder thing, but then a 21st century version, right?
Romeo & Juliette appeared on the Banyan Trees compilation disc, Yellow Peril (2004) (produced by Clas Lundkvist). A few hundred copies of those were given out for free. I've had the Yellow Peril version up for a while and will rotate more songs (by different artists) from these Banyan Trees CD's in the future! (You can click the first link for the original demo version of Romeo & Juliette and Yellow Peril for the album version.)
I now toy the idea to record this song again, and i would very much so like to hear Sjang Coenen on bass, his friend and 44Rave colleague Big Dave on harmonica.....
Modus Operandi is the result of exploring the realms of GarageBand. I suddenly found myself wandering the streets of Loopsville and had pleasant encounters with its residents. Sara & Sascha liked what they heard and threw in a loop, thus so The Couch Potatoes were born. More GarageBand M.O. to come!
Binocular Man (instrumental version) is entirely looped and will soon be completed with lyrics and vocals.

Influences: The Play My String Thang is somewhat of a sketchbook maybe, it started in the 80s and went on hold for a few years to suddenly crawl out again in the 90s. If i find time to juggle the GarageBand software on my computer, i might pick it up, this songwriting thang! There's however no ambition or desire to get out and go up on stage myself. Just this one wish for someone else to record one, two or three of those songs. I can be patient...
