Canyon resident dies after raceway accident

MODJESKA CANYON – David C. Edgar built his first dragster when he was a teenager.
His love for fast cars eventually gave way to his love for a woman – he sold the dragster engine to buy her an engagement ring.
Years later, after a marriage that produced two daughters (he eventually fathered seven children with three wives), Edgar decided to take up drag racing again.
On March 15, the well-known canyon resident who operated an equestrian center was racing a Jeep at the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana.
As brother Pat helplessly watched, Edgar's Jeep made an abrupt turn and hit a wall head on at about 120 mph. Observers believe Edgar's brake line popped and he couldn't stop the Jeep in time.
Edgar, also a safety officer with the U.S. Forest Service and licensed private investigator, suffered severe lower brainstem trauma and a collapsed lung. He had built the racing machine with brother Pat.
Relatives took him off life support Monday at Arrowhead Medical Center in Colton, putting an end to a colorful, eventful life.
Edgar, who loved horses, camping and all things outdoors, was 59.
"He died doing one of the many things in life he so loved,'' said a sister, Sally Edgar-Barma, of Reno. "He loved life. He was truly one of the great ones.
"
For more than three decades, Edgar's parents owned two large chunks of land in the Trabuco Canyon area.
He and his five siblings rode horses on the family's 300-plus-acre 4-S Ranch off Live Oak Canyon Road, and roamed around 640 acres of pristine wilderness in the Holy Jim region of the Cleveland National Forest.
The Edgar family bought the properties in 1959 but sold them in the mid-1990s. David Edgar was the only sibling to remain in the rugged canyon region of Orange County.
He was owner of the Santiago Equestrian Center, a 15-acre spread tucked behind Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park on Santiago Canyon Road.
October's Santiago fire damaged the stables but left Edgar's nearby estate in Modjeska Canyon unscathed. In an interview as the wildfires raged, he proudly said that properly clearing brush had saved his home.
At the time of his death, Edgar had been battling cancer for about two years, according to Edgar-Barma. True to his character, he had kept quiet about the diagnosis, not wanting to worry anyone, she said.
In the days after the accident, a steady stream of relatives and friends flooded into the hospital.
Steve Seltzner and Betty Ashe, Edgar's colleagues at the U.S. Forest Service, tirelessly worked to ease family and friends through the tragedy.
"He had a lot of charisma and a lot of friends," said Edgar's brother Stephen, 61, a business owner in northern Arizona.
"And he never sat still. No moss would ever grow under him.
