Shabutie was the band established before Coheed and Cambria, which started in 2001. They released 4 EPs during there span, 2 of which were used as the base for Coheed and Cambria's first CD, "The Second Stage Turbine Blade."

The original members of the band came from various backgrounds, and played various styles of music. Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever were in a band called Toxic Parents before Shabutie. Nate Kelley came from a band called Moe and the Boogey Cats after the lead singer left for a UFO cult in Nevada in 1995. And the last member, Michael Todd, knew Nate from another side project that they worked together on. Before Michael Todd, the bassist for Shabutie was Jon Carleo.
In 1999, Nate Kelley left for personal conflictions inside the band, and Todd's friend from another site project, Josh Eppard, sat in as the permanent drummer. Shabutie put out 2 more EPs (Delirium Trigger and Coheed and Cambria) before changing their name to Coheed and Cambria.
Shabutie did a numerous amount of shows in the late 90's around the New York City area. One show was recorded, and the song, "Nauraushaun" was born. The song was actually found out later to be two songs taped very close together.
