Shane Perkins is a member of Pilla Boyz. The name Pilla is a slang term used in reference to the family name.
Shane was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, and produced his first CD with two other local rappers known as Vino and Co-Stil. He proceeded with his music before moving to Mississippi in order to hook up with Little D, known as Darrick Martin .
Shane participated in various shows. He knew the shows was great opportunity to get promotion. However, the shows was also an eye opener.
He has seen how stressful and consuming this industry is for a struggling artist to get where they need to be. Im too motivated to fall off, regardless of the obstacles, Perkins commented. But, no matter the obstacles, Ill never withdraw.
Shane believes his background shows his dedication to the craft. He has been rehearsing street verses since childhood. He has spent days and nights in the studio, often times going without sleep, and recording right after work.
Shanes background was especially influential not only on the content of his rap, but to his dedication to rap as well.
I was influenced by my parents, who were always by my side, but it was kind of rough to grow up in Chicago, said Perkins. It was a help to have my father there to give me advice about what to watch out for on the streets, how not to trust any and every, and he instilled in my head to not let the streets get the best of me, and I felt like rap was positive and it kept me out of trouble. The main thing that kept me in the studio was when I damn near lost all my friends to the streets. That fueled my dedication, because I didnt want to end up like them. I would've rather been out selling CDs than selling drugs with my friends, though I still did at times. Rap was the result of my circumstances, and a way out of that lifestyle. My dad always told me to be everything, and Ive got the heart of my mother to make it in the rap game, Perkins continued.Another part of the groundwork has been the creation of a local audience. The group has already created posters, as well as inserts and CD covers for the CDs they have sold locally.
Perkins journey to this point has been long, winding, and difficult. When I was 6 years old, and my brother, JP, heard me rapping in the kitchen and he liked the way I was handling my words, said Perkins. He took me to the studio, and we layed down my first track. JP always believed in me when it came to rapping, and that motivated me when he got locked up for 6 years. He always wrote me letters and he had a positive influence on my mind to stay in the studio. At 13, I got dissed by a group, South Clan. At 15, me and Vino G hooked up, and we came out together with a CD entitled Last Days.
Perkins hooked up with some rappers that already had their own labels, including Co-Stil. They told me that if I wasnt good enough, Id had to ride the bench, but I was good enough. Perkins said. The CD included cameos by Psycho Drama, Triple Darkness, and Twister, and made it to the Mom and Pop stores of Chicago. It was a compilation done by the South side and the West side.
While money is certainly an object, it is not the sole inspiration behind the music of Pilla Boyz. The group plans to give back to the community as much as possible if it has as much success as other Mississippi rappers such as Afroman and David Banner.
I want to give thanks to the people in Mississippi for their support, and Ive got to give thanks to all my people in Chicago on the south side for showing me love, Perkins added. All you haters, I love yall for taking the time to think about us. And for the people that have murder on their mind for me, I never back down, and Im still breathing.
MI Crooked, it's a blessing 2 be here and enjoy what we are about 2 do. It's much love and we gonna rep these streets of the SIPP and the Chi.
