Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens

About Me

Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens were formed in 2005 when solo singer/songwriter Julia Johnson started to feel a bit lonely on stage by herself, and had ideas for her songs which she couldn't pull off live on-stage without three pairs of extra hands. The extra hands she enlisted play bass, electric guitar, and drums. Although, when the song needs it, you might see a Deep Sea Siren on a banjo, a gloc, or a casiotone the drummer Nick found for $10 in Vinnies.
Since their formation, the band have grown into a folk-pop/alt country four piece which has been described as sweet, eclectic, melancholic, sultry and enchanting. Julia’s tales are normally of love and love gone wrong, but she ventures into other aspects of every day life as well, from wandering the streets of Canberra being bored on a Friday night, to tragic train disasters in Cootamundra.
Their live sets are very dynamic; even within songs Julia will range from a quiet whisper to a desperate cry. The Deep Sea Sirens compliment her delicate and unusual style of finger-picking beautifully with their lilting guitar lines, colourful, melodic drums and bowed bass guitar.
The release of their first album in 2007 resulted in great reviews from press across the country, not to mention airplay on JJJ, ABC radio and community stations in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania and Perth. (And this one time on BBC Midlands in the UK!)
The band toured to Sydney and Melbourne on the back of the release, making friends and gathering up a modest interstate following.
2009 sees JDSS reforming with two new members, who will be welcomed in with a lavish celebration/album fund-raiser in the coming months. Later in the year the second album will be released and it gets me so excited that I have to stop writing in third person - it's sounding SO amazing with our two new Sirens! - Julia
