Paper Cities is an Instrumental trio from Brooklyn, NY that assembled in late 2005. Although the band is a relatively new project, the members of the group have been long time friends. Bassist Adam Bernstein was in a band known as HongKongathon from 2001-2003. He is also a founding member of this Brooklyn based ensemble.
While Adam was working on this and various other projects, guitarist Matt Hopard and drummer James Cucinotta worked with vocalist/guitarist Andrew Salter in a group known as Dramatic Structures. The band existed from 2004-late 2005, where the boys parted on good terms. At this point, these close friends finally could work together on a band with a new, more instrumentally driven sound that drew from influences as diverse as metal, jazz, pop and post-rock. The band would describe they're writing approach as more song driven than most other instrumental bands. Most songs are written as if there was a vocalist, with a voice all their own.The group has finally self-released their self titled debut album available for only $5 at shows and on Itunes and Emusic for just a dollar more. Collectively and individually the members of Paper Cities have played numerous venues including North Six, the Orange Bear, L'amour, Freddy's Pub in Brooklyn, CBGB's, the Knitting Factory, and Seton Hall. Since completion of the album, Paper Cities has kept busy writing and playing out. There are currently 3 new songs in rotation that do not appear on the recording and more where that came from. Most recently the band was asked to play the Emergenza festival, an extensive battle-of-the-bands competition lasting nine months. Proudly, Paper Cities were able to advance to the second round which took place at The Bitter End. Sadly this saw the end of the festival for Paper Cities but it also made their resolve to succeed that much stronger as they have since been working diligently on the follow-up to their self-titled debut. A release they hope to complete by the end of the year.Until then they will of course be playing out as much as possible and by the end of the year hope to capture one of these such performances on video so as to make their YouTube debut as well. Paper Cities would also like to put forward their interest in playing at house shows and parties. If you can throw it, we want to play it. Contact us by email, myspace, or at a show. You wont be sorry.
