21/12/06: I'm in fairy land!!! And finding it very very hard to type on this particular East European keyboard. It was so cool landing yesterday afternoon - the sky was red and orange as we flew low over the alps and forests, and dropped very suddenly to the plane (flat ground) and capital. Slovenia is a small country, I guess there's not much room for you to land before you skip it and end up over Croatia or further. ;P We had to spiral around between the occasional mountains to get to the runway. I'm surprised I didn't shit myself - well proud, and very cool. :)
22/12/06: Yesterday we went to Italy and back (to Sežana), just for the hell of it. We went to see this view over Trst/Trieste: very pretty but windy as hell. Most amusing. They couldn't even be arsed looking at my non-EU passport at the border - which is strange given my typical experiences of being bullied. They just looked really bored and waved us on like, 'who gives a shit anyway':"Eh." After that... met a few people and went for a coffee in Ljubljana - go 60p for a cappuccino in a capital city! ...and now just generally taking it easy. I can't describe how much I need this!!
23/12/06: Yesterday, went 'christmas tree hunting' - old school with sickle and dodgy detours down deserted roads. All fun. Collected home-made apple juice... made pizza with pršut/proscuitto... ate... and was just LAAAAAAZY. Excellent stuff! Been having a slight headache with Slovenian Tolars/Euros as they change on the 1st Jan... and Tolars are crazy. Always panic when I buy stuff and probably always get ripped off if left alone. Alright, paranoia more like.
As for today: LAAAAAZY again, went to see my aunt Silva, broke into a local school (with my uncle Zmago the headmaster), had some port-like substance in his office (school was never like this!), got a free pen, and tonight going out, yay! Good times ahead...
24/12/06: Well, I absolutely pissed myself last night. I haven't seen so many mentalists that remind me so much of me in one place before. It was a concert/giant Slovenian piss-fest in a giant tent. I was just cracking up when one of the bands played a crazy Slovenian version of Zorba. I SO wish some of the Greeks were there to see it. Andy would've roared, and no doubt Sophia would've keeled over. Hehehe. Just a shame about 'power issues' in Sežana. Anyway, this evening is to Koper to see another aunt and other rels, and tomorrow to Pivka and Drskovce for more food than should in most other countries be possible to physically consume.
25/12/06: Yesterday... can't remember straight up. Oh yeah. Went to collect more apple juice, then went to Koper to see my aunt Toncka, and cousins of sorts Sergij & Nataša. Today went to Pivka to see other family, and met 2 extra 2nd cousins, Blanka and Marko. Had some shots and wine and fooood surprisingly enough. Showed and took lots of pictures as usual, then went to Drskovce and filmed a little almost-4-year-old 2nd-cousin-once-removed (Nika) sing some Slovenian songs. Hee hee. So sweet.
26/12/06: Drove across the border to Italy again, but this time to Udine, to get the train to Vienna. It would be too logical to go straight to Austria from Slovenia - but takes much much longer apparently. So, in an old carriage shared with a dog and Italian family, I arrived via the alps in 6.5 hours time. Uroš picked me up, we saw a bit of Vienna, and went for beer/s in Bar 1516. Sehr gut.
27/12/06: Saw more of Vienna, did a bit of shopping (DAMN, needed that English tea!!), watched the Sound of Music (can't have a cousin studying guitar in Austria and not knowing what the Sound of Music is... aaaand made some Wiener Schnitzel with potatoes and veg. We'll never be hungry again. Plus I had waaaaay too much fun taunting one of Uroš's friends on msn. Zakaj ne?!!! :D
28/12/06: Saw a little more of Vienna, namely Uroš's uni, and music shops looking for a particular piece of sheet music for his friend flutist Brina. We walked through a park which seemed dedicated to various composers, and it started snowing, a bit - finally *something* for my new pointless snow boots. After that, it was out of the cold and a looong drive out of Austria, across the border to Slovenia, and Sežana again. TIRED! Plans are coming together for New Years though, very very much looking forward. :)
29/12/06: Nothing. Lazy. Big birthday party tomorrow.
30/12/06: In the morning, got the rest of my present for Majda, and stopped off at Lipica. Lipica is where the Lipicane/Lipizzaner horses come from. They're Slovenian, not Italian or Austrian or Guatemalan as the other countries try to claim. Uroš said there is a 'Lipizzaner' museum in Vienna, but not once does it mention they are Slovenian. Apparently they just come from "near Trieste". The horses are born jet black, and as they mature they go grey and then white. They're very graceful and are known for their 'dancing.'
After that, there was much preparation for the birthday party at night. FOOOOOOOD. HRANAAAAA. Shit. 5 course meal. And I filled up on the entree. Uroš and I escaped quickly with the red wine after the 3rd course, and I introduced him to the horrors of weebls-stuff.com. We spent the rest of the evening being very silly and pissing ourselves laughing.
31/12/06: Went and saw Teta Silva again, who looks much better. It was her birthday.
Besides that, bad news, plans for going to Ljubljana for NY eve fell through. Sucked. Then last minute something was rearranged, I got a lift to Pivka then went with my 2nd cousin Tadej to Ljubljana. We picked up two of his uni mates, and went for a pršut pizza dinner in the city centre, very very good. After that we started drinking in his student flat, and found out something by accident. My grandfather and others insisted I should find a Slovenian bloke. I tend to joke "Nah, they'll all be related". So, jokes aside, we found that all four of us were related. I discovered that Tadej's friend Denis was the cousin of my 2nd cousins Dejan and Katja in Drskovce: a Krebelj. Crazy but somehow unsurprising. So Tadej's friends were 2nd cousins, one was 1st cousins with my 2nd cousins (and Tadej's), I was 2nd cousins with Tadej. Confused??? No wonder my brother has such big ears and is a little bit special lol. So we spent all night calling each other 'cousin,' and referring to anyone Slovenian out that night as cousins.
So! Into town with whiskey, bacardi, red wine and Champagne/Campanze/Chimpanzee in towe, we met up with more cousins - Blanka, Marko and partners. We were in the crowd just in time for the countdown and fireworks. Had so much fun! We climbed up out of the crowd and onto a very bumpy model of Ljubljana, on which several times my heels became wedged between buildings, and on several occassions I nearly catapulted to lower ground/hot dog tent & bbq next to me. Then the Slovenian and Croatian music and mentalists. Midnight also brought in the Euro from the Tolar, and some very costly early morning munchie food. By some blur we got back, and when everyone resorted to drinking water, I was still pouring myself wine. Not too wise at all! So there was me with a mangled mix of English and bullshit drunken Slovenian, insisting to Tadej that my blue socks on the chair were not mine, then after I decided to re-adopt them, laughed heartily whilst enjoying myself slapping my 'cousins' with either sock. Can't quite remember why, just that I was very amused. Finally got to sleep at about 7am.
Srecno novo leto!!!
Lets hope the theory that 'what you do on the first day of the year you'll repeat for the rest of the year' is not true.
01/01/07: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nooooooooo! Leave me in bed. The pain, and queezy queezy stomach! Had to drive back to Sežana but travel and hangover (known as a male cat in Slovenian for some reason: Macek, or as the 'cousins' called it all night "Meow-meow").... very very bad idea. Luckily I was sick just before we started driving. I don't know when that last happened but geezzzzz... Met with Uroš and drove the rest of the way back to Sežana, stopping for critical pršut pizza and coke, and tried very hard to keep it down. Got back to Sežana and completely died for many hours. Not really any chance of moving on to the relatives in Drskovce today, and I don't think they particularly wanted me either. :)
So yes, my first real Slovenian Macek is not one to forget. Meow-meow.
02/01/2007: Well I finally made it to Drskovce, and the house my grandfather grew up in. Dejan, Melita and Verena came and picked me up from Sežana in the evening, we visited cousins etc in Kosanja first - Leon has grown a lot and loves playing hunting games. After this we went for a pršut pizza dinner (see a pattern here?). Just stayed the one night, and a silly giggly one with four people in the one room.
03/01/2007: Leon came over to Drskovce to visit. Dejan told him that I spoke funny because I work for Santa Claus, and I'm from the North Pole. He said that if he was naughty I would tell Santa Claus and he would be in trouble. I wondered why Leon was looking at me weird. At least he played animal games with me after awhile, and asked me if I could be Dejan's pig. Great. Hahahaha... Later on I went to Pivka to stay.

08/01/2007: Slept in. Very foggy mysterious cold looking day. Bought some breadcrumbs because you can't get anything normal like that in the UK, and bought some film for the camera. Had dinner in Drskovce, said bye to Bine the dog, Katja, Dejan, etc...
