About Me

This year's All Souls Procession Weekend begins with the photo exhibit on November 6, Friday, continuing to the Procession of the Little Angels on November 7, Saturday and ending with the All Souls Procession on Sunday, November 8th.The All Souls Procession is perhaps one of the most important, inclusive and authentic public ceremonies in North America today. The Procession had its beginnings in 1990 with a ritualistic performance piece created by local artist Susan Johnson, who was grieving the passing of her father. Inspired by Mexico's Dia de los Muertos holiday, Johnson felt she should honor her father in celebration and creativity. The performance was very well received and many artists were inspired to continue growing the Procession into its modern incarnation.
Today we find ourselves organizing over 10,000 participants on the streets of downtown Tucson for a two-mile long human-powered procession that ends in the finalizing action of burning a large urn filled with the hopes, offerings and wishes for those who have passed. Inside the event are myriads of installation art, altars, performers, and creatives of all kinds collaborating for almost half the year to prepare their offerings to this amazing event. The All Souls Procession, and now the entire All Souls Weekend, is a celebration and mourning of the lives of our loved ones who have passed.
Many Mouths One Stomach ( www.manymouths.org ), a non-profit arts collective based in Tucson, AZ, is the organizing body for the Procession, and serves as a vehicle for working artists to collaborate, create, and inspire the public through Festal Culture.
"Festal Culture" refers to the expression and fulfillment of core human needs through public celebration, ceremony, and ritual. The All Souls Procession is an event that was created to serve the public need to mourn, reflect, and celebrate the universal experience of Death, through their ancestors, loved ones, and the living.
The Procession is a sanctuary for community members from all walks of life to express their grief and loss in a celebration of creative energy and a rejoicing of living.
With the continued cooperation of the City of Tucson, Tucson Police and Fire departments, local businesses, civic organizations, and participants like YOU- MMOS has guided the development of the parade to accommodate the growing number of participants in a healthy and harmonious way.

MMOS SUPPORTER PROGRAM
As a cultural organization, MMOS must fund raise each year to cover expenses for our major events and projects - most of which are FREE for the public to enjoy. These expenses include FREE community workshops, art materials, barricading, permits, flyers, promotion, upgrades, goods, and gear- and we are always in need of YOUR support!

Many Mouths One Stomach was created as a mechanism for creating and promoting modern Festal Culture. Festal culture responds to core human needs for deep meaning, connection, celebration, rites of passage, and personal expression. Our events, like the All Souls Procession, establish a legacy that reclaims public space through art and blurs the line between participant and observer; ritual and performance.
Now more than ever people are starving for intentionally-driven art that has the power to engage, transform, and heal. Ironically, the arts are also among the most under funded sectors of our society. But, you can be a trend-setter by donating to MMOS. Your support ensures our organization's future, and your donation will be well rewarded!
As an MMOS SUPPORTER, you become a primary stakeholder in our mission to perpetuate modern Festal Culture. There is no other group seeking cultural transformation at such a core, archetypal level in the Southwest, and your donations will further help MMOS serve the individuals, families, and the community in the most effective ways possible. Please support us to the extent you can. Also, you get a number of pretty cool THANK YOU GIFTS(see below), and become a recipient of our quarterly newsletter. Here, you'll get the latest info regarding MMOS and its projects, events, info on how you can participate, fund raising activities, and additional opportunities for MMOS SUPPORTERS Only.
