Big Wess Survival. A word that we may all be familiar with, but a word that one man truly lives. in an industry still stuck on freeze, oversaturated and consumed in the era of “ bling bling”, we find an mc that isn’t defined by the chase to aquire material things. Moreover he is defined by true riches. His Heart and soul. His story is one of More than worldly means. It’s the day to day struggle to survive, in pursuit of a dream. Wess speaks his own truth, and shares with us the path which has shaped him, and made him the man that he is today. Raised by the streets, wess overcame imprisonment at a young age. He survived the numerous hardships and struggles that go along with being a young man groomed to survive in an ever-changing environment that daily threatens your life. Living with the knowledge that at any moment, like so many others in the same game, his life could be taken away. In search of something to distract from that reality, Rap became the solace for big wess. His outlet to express the frustrations and experiences of a painful existence. His writing began to take shape, and in a pivotal time where his life was based on living with nothing to lose, came his reason for living with a purpose. A son. Unable to imagine his child growing up like his father, wess knew it was time to make a change, to protect his future, and ensure that he pave the right path for his son to take. In “scared to die”, the heartfelt tale of his journey to hell and back, one is overwhelmed by the emotion and conviction behind the song he wrote for his son. within his words, therein lies the apology that he offers his son, for the kind of life that could leave him fatherless. In a world where hope didn’t have a chance to live, hope now lives and breathes in wess, and purpose now resides in his eyes. Having a young life to watch over, to protect, and provide for, wess’s determination and focus brought him back to the music, as well as a new-found awareness of the dangers he’d been exposed to. With the state of hip-hop in disarray, wess is a comforting reminder, that there are still people who can spit the truth. And that truth has paved the way for him to leave behind the kind of life that few are able to escape. Currently in the midst of completing his debut album, wess takes us through the chapters that are his story thus far. A story of struggle, of sacrifice, and pain, from nothing to lose, to new found faith. And noone else knows better than him, the difference a day can make, when life can so easily be taken away.
