MANTRA: Cowards die many times before their deaths; The Valiant never taste of death but once.http://www.e-teatr.pl/pl/artykuly/42454.htmlRomeo and Juliet by the professional Aquila Theatre from New York set against the background of the raw but very honest production by students from London Metropolitan University looks as if it was school children training. After the third day of Shakespeare Theatre, ,,ukasz Rudzinski from New Critical Strength/Force/Energy writes. After the Polish Comedy of Errors and a Russian King Lear came the turn for English language shows. Firstly students from London Metropolitan University presented themselves with a very lively realisation of AMSND that breaks away traditional patterns of reception of the play. Following this came the Americans from Aquila Theatre who performed Romeo and Juliet built on very similar idea to those of the students from England. And the idea lies in the juggling of the characters. The English use surprising elements of the wardrobe – a red cap symbolises Helena, white scarf Lysander multi-coloured shawl for Hermia and a golden cravat for Demetrius. Those items ‘migrate’ from hand to hand and the actors speak their lines of the given character depending on which part of the wardrobe they hold. And one has to agree that it is funny because the young performers maintain control over the action of the drama and pick up their roles as if auditioning for drama school, but without the stress of being examined. Instead of Shakespearean craftsmen they present themselves - young people preparing for their show. They come out of their roles only in order to return to them instantly, playing the story of the four lovers or the tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe. The main emphasis is placed on the love story of Hermia, Demetrius, Helena and Lysander – they are definitely the best moments of the show, it is obvious that this is when the actors most enjoy performing – they are spontaneous, passionate and full of energy. Their joyfulness infects the audience who receive warmly this variation on the theme of Shakespeare’s drama. Perhaps there is too little real improvisation, and too many of those ‘set’ improvisations – when students try to imitate themselves they loose their naturalness and spontaneity which gives their show its freshness and lightness.A Midsummer Night’s Dream by London Metropolitan University takes the spectator into a climate closer to a dormitory after a party or some student camping trip rather than the legendary land of the fairies. In one corner an electric guitar lies, everywhere without any order there are gadgets strewn around some of which will be used (eg a Barbie doll as a dagger) some are laid out (or hung on the washing line) in the same way till the end of the show. The Christmas lights are flickering throughout. The tent is a refuge for Hermia during her unhappy dream when her lover Lysander is thrown out from the tent, (so he is not tempted) will fall under Puck’s “spell†getting drunk on a bottle of wine given to him by Puck and falls in love with Helena. The text of the play weighs only a little on the performers, but this is only a pretext to show in caricature the life of today’s youth and their student love affairs. A lot of different episodes appear – among others, a presentation of different theatrical methods, for example Kantor or Stanislavski. These elements are pulled together and treated with a wink of the eye. Instead of Fairy Tale there is a holiday atmosphere, hence Oberon and Titania become redundant. From the whole fairy world only Puck remained, actually PCUK, which refers to the fashion brand FCUK. And it is Puck who becomes the master of ceremonies who makes unexpected changes in Helena’s and her companions’ world. The dance underlines his difference and the rhythm dictates his movements. Pleasing to the eye, this contemporary burlesque hits the spot.

"He felt keenly concious of how barren all intellectual speculation is when seperated from action and experiment. He knew that the senses, no less the soul, have their spiritual mysteries to reveal"Here is where i lure you into the cognitive workings of my mind by giving you nuggets of knowledge about myself eh?
