Becky Alter is a singer-songwriter, based in NM. She plays acoustic guitar and mandolin, and writes on both. Her originals are indie-folk and acoustic rock, and she has been described as having the voice of an angel.
Becky grew up playing classical piano and used to revel in making metal surfaces humm along with her singing. Becky had the great pleasure of being surrounded by some outstanding musicians in her early years, including Missy Raines, Freyda Epstein, John McCutcheon, Bill Evans... She finally started putting poetry, sounds, and music together in her teens, teaching herself both guitar and mandolin.
Becky's songs are powerful, mesmerizing, and compelling. They are statements about life, love, politics, and the general state of affairs. Some are stories that just wanted to be told. These stories fall both in and outside of the traditional folk realm, with just enough string bending to balance the lulling sounds of her voice. She covers music that ranges from traditional gospel and lullabies, to bluegrass, rockin' folk and acoustic rock.
Of a recent demo, TinderBox Music wrote: "Becky's voice rings clarity and perfection. The vocals are smooth and have a trancy-ness about them that almost make you forget where you are and what you are doing...The acoustic guitar resonates wonderfully and has great tone with good mids."
Becky recently played in a duo with Steff Chanat called "us featuring you". Here's a clip of them performing "rendezvous":
