Yeah, you heard it right. The name is Skillz! From street hustlin to street rhymin Skillz has been in the game for well over a decade. Hell, The 10 Year Anniversary Limited Edtion Coast Boyz Compilation just dropped on Jul 4th of this year! So, 10 years ago this man was already droppin albums! What were you doing 10 years ago? Probably the same thing Skillz was doing but he was on another level. With fans still to this very day, Skillz has made a very good name for himself in the streets.
So, you wanna know a little bit about Skillz? Skillz is originally from Pascagoula, Mississippi, but now resides in Gautier, Mississippi. He will be 30 years old on August 6th. That's right, ladies. He looks younger but has the right wisdom for his age. You would be surprised! And, yes, he is taken! Skillz has been performing on stage since the age of 11 in front of friends and family as well as coliseum and club crowds. The name speaks for itself. The name was given to him by his 6th grade teacher Ms. Barron and he has had the name ever since. Not many people actually know his real name but it is no secret. His real name is Derrick McDougal but he is never called by that name.
Skillz wrote his first music as a tennager growing up in Carver Village which is the biggest known drug area and apartment complex known in South Mississippi and maybe in Mississippi. Skillz was raised in Carver Village along with many of his other peers. A lot of whom or locked up, on drugs, or even dead but many survived and the dream still lives on! Skillz was one of the survivors and wtih that came a lot of the content that you will hear Skillz rap about in his music. The music is deep and just makes you say, "that was real". As one of the biggest known names in music on the coast Skillz definitely has what it takes to be among the best in the business. But, hey, even the greatest have to suffer sometimes.
In 1997, Skillz helped create and join a group called "The Coast Boyz". That group consisted of Jinx, Skillz, Young Iceberg, Nightmare, and Puffy. With DJ Chestang as executive producer at the time the Coast Boyz had a definite shot a stardom. The debut album was a compilation album entitled "Smoke & Ride" to be released in September of 1998. That album was the hottest Rap album of the time to ever hit the gulf coast. The albums are still talked about daily in south Mississippi. You know there is no album like the first one!
In 2000, was the release of The Coast Boyz second compilation called "Still Rid'N". It was a double-disc compilation featuring hot local artists such as The 228 Boyz, The South Boyz, Al Gator, Feladon, Mike Boss, Mr. Silencer, and many more. There were many complications with this album but it was still released as is because the streets were wanting for it. A major contribution to the album was killed not long before album was released to slow down the process even more. Major "Dollar Bill" Barfield was killed on Skillz's birthday that year leading to another delay in the release of the album. Skillz and Young Iceberg was also incarcerated before the release of the album on drug related charges. Things were not looking up for the group but they were "still ridin".
In 2003, Young Iceberg released his solo album called "P.O.W.E.R.". It featured Skillz & Jinx of the Original Coast Boyz and a few other artists. It is still considered a street classic in the hoods of Mississippi today.
Skillz was incarcerated in early 2006 not to be released until this year in January 2008. As soon as he hit the streets he was back to the music scene again setting a floor plan for what's about to come in our near future. Skillz hooked up with an old time friend he's known for years who was starting a business and he jumped aboard. His longtime friend known to his friends as "Aktion Jackson" started a record label called Rebel Musik and added Skillz to the team. Now Aktion Jackson owns 2 record stores and a record label. Skillz manages the stores and helps promote the business to keep it to a profiting potential. With 2 masterminds together along with others, you may get to see Rebel Musik record stores anywhere in the nation! But this is not just a label. It's a MOVEMENT. Rebel Musik sponsors events, sponsors, children, does community activities, host shows and events, and much much more! There is no telling what you might hear about coming out of Rebel Musik.
Overall, Skillz is an entreprenuer, a business man, a good person, and one of the realest people you will ever get to know. If you are a fan, then you already know. Everyone goes through trials and tribulations but don't let that get you away from the fact that Skillz has what it takes to be one of the best there is and maybe THE best.
