1/11/2008A band’s motives can get easily entangled among all the proverbial sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll of the music world these days, but Zach Lund and the Southside Sound is one down-to-earth band. This band truly cares about the music and the message it’s putting out there to audiences. And while they haven’t appeared on “TRL†with hundreds of screaming fans just yet, something tells me these guys could handle fame pretty well.Zach Lund, 17, of Jenks, leads the band with vocals and guitar, and Chris Wilson, 16, of Holland Hall, plays the drums. The two band members met through a mutual friend. The Southside Sound has now been together for about “one year and three months,†Chris said. You can tell there is a lot of love and appreciation for music between the two guys in the band, and that comes through in their own songs.Their music-making process is simple: Song chords and melodies are written by Zach, and later Chris comes up with his own drum rhythms. Zach explained that his songs are about just enjoying life, with the ocassional political song thrown in.The band’s dynamics are only heightened by its members’ wideranging musical inspirations. Chris said he’s influencedby Stevie Wonder and James Brown, while Zach is inspired by G. Love, Miles Davis, Ben Harper and Kanye West. Their music beautifully displays this diversity of idols.Describing the “southside sound,†Zach explained it as, “original, funky, jazzy, cool, fun and party.â€When asked about the battle in February, both Chris and Zach seemed excited.“We just want to get to play at Cain’s,†Zach said. In preparation to possibly play the Satellite Battle of the Bands, the Southside Sound is putting together a good set for the show with some old and new songs.“And I actually started weightlifting for it,†joked Chris. The Southside Sound’s edge over the competition will be its flow, stage presence, and style, they said. The battle has not yet taken place, but Zach Lund and the Southside Sound have a good shot at taking the whole thing. From their laidback style to their innovative beats, this band transcends all genres to attract listeners of many kinds. The guys have a relaxed demeanor about the battle. Both Zach and Chris are veterans when it comes to playing shows. Bother say the King of Clubs in Claremore has been their favorite venue so far. Their dream venue, though? After some deliberating the guys decide upon an answer: a yacht.Although the results aren’t clear, the band’s message is.“Enjoy life and don’t be so uptight, but at the same time don’t not care about anything, because you should care about something,†said Zach. And regardless of whether they win or lose, Zach and Chris said they will keep playing their music.“I just want to travel the world and play music,†said Zach of his life goals.
