About Me

NEW TECHNOLOGY - Mixlab is a new technology for mixing surround sound audio projects. Described by many as a completely new audio experience, Mixlab uses the entire surround sound spectrum. It takes multi-channel to a new totally new surround environment, says JVCs Jerry Barbera, frankly speaking, the speakers just disappear! Mixlab is compatible with all multi-channel formats including Dolby Digital, DTS, THX as well as 5.1, 7.1 and 9.1 systems. The technology is used in the recording studio during final audio mixing and is available for use in both the music and film industries.Unlike other technologies that convert stereo CDs into 5.1 mixes by adding effects to the rear channels, Mixlab works with the original multi-track masters and can accommodate up to 4,096 tracks of audio per song. Mixlab works by analyzing and deconstructing a song on a track by track basis. The technology obtains several data points for each track including stereo panning, recording source (mono, stereo, surround, etc.), instrumentation, arrangements and several others. These data points are then mathematically reconstructed into the most balanced and phase free mix possible from the more than 2.5 million possible mixes for an average song.In addition to providing the most balanced mix possible utilizing the entire surround spectrum, Mixlab was designed to save time and money during the surround mixing process. After initial setup is completed, applying the Mixlab technology takes only 1-2 hours per song in addition to the standard time executing a stereo mix. The setup times vary depending upon which console is used, and the nature of the outboard gear. The stage where Mixlab is used is after a rough stereo mix has been completed, but before the final effects and levels are employed. The final stereo mix can also be a starting point if already completed but effects and levels will likely be tweaked especially if the effects are stereo and surround effects are desired. At that point the Mixlab operator will enter the studio and input the rough mix into the Mixlab device, wherein the song specific panning will be generated in the surround spectrum for all of the original multi-tracks. The Mixlab operator can also aid in the configuration and recommended settings for surround sound effects including 5.1 reverb and 5.1 compression. Once the Mixlab operator has translated the stereo mix into a surround sound mix, the primary mixing engineer and producer will have complete control over all the surround panning if changes are desired. However, our experience shows that most producers and engineers will not change the panning and instead concentrate on levels and any rides on tracks that have changed prominence in the surround mix.Mixlab can be used with any mixing console provided there is at least one surround compatible device that accommodates panning in the digital domain. In our experience a Pro Tools system gives a fair amount of flexibility to work in conjunction with analog consoles and outboard gear. However, Mixlab can work with any system with similar functionality. Actual equipment requirements are on a case by case basis depending on the actual console, number of tracks per song, etc..Although Mixlab is designed to be used by stereo only producers and experienced 5.1 mixing engineers alike, Mixlab can also provide an end-to-end solution whereby all the mixing engineers are provided and a 5.1 master is delivered with as much or as little input as the client desires.
