Cossack may also refer to a member of a Cossack military unit. Originally Cossacks were runaway Ukrainian and Russian peasants who escaped Polish and Muscovite feudal pressure and settled in the southern steppes.
Famous were the Cossacks (????´??, Kazaki) of the Don, Terek and Ural regions, as well as areas of Siberia (such as the Baikal Cossacks). Their numbers grew during late medieval times, joined by numerous Russian serfs fleeing from their owners. Eventually Cossacks became guardians of ethnic and state boundaries

Before i can take my first, much needed gulp of the golden nectar however, the first band ‘Cossacks’ have already taken to the stage upstairs. I walk up the sticky black steps to find the floor which the bands perform, already bustling and a queue forming to pay their £5 entrance fee and have their hand stamped by the lovely Sarah, the much loved door girl. ‘Cossacks’ perform an energetic set sending us traces of The Cooper Temple Clause mixed with a splash of The Automatic. It’s a blend that seems to have a fairly large early crowd pumping and they set the night up nicely for everyone.review of suburban kings gig. Words By Ross Hurley
