A modern Southern belle knows that telling the truth is vastly overrated. A justifiably admired Southern woman was once asked in an interview: "On what occasion do you lie?" She didn't miss a beat: "Whenever I have to - it is called manners." the truth, as everyone knows often hurts, and only the pompous impart it for its own sake. The old adage should be amended to "If you can't say something nice, make something up." No one ever felt bad about being told they look fabulous, even if they look like a toad.
