Elle started getting known by winning contests like Ritmi Globali (1997) and Arezzo Wave (1998); this way they got the attention of many critics who, at the time, designed the band as one of the most interesting outfits of the moment. Later, the self-produced debut record "Caffè & Cadillacs" showed the band's real value. "Bruciamo ciò che resta" ( March 2001-Urtovox/Audioglobe) is the title of the first release of Elle on Urtovox. The production task was held by a veteran like Geoff Turner (Senator Flux, Gray Mater, New Wet Kojak). The cd got great reviews and a massive airplay on most of Italian indie radios and it was one of the finalists of Mucchio Selvaggio's own competition (it's a quite popular Italian indie magazine). At the same time the band appeared on many samplers like "Loser my religion ..2", on which the band gave a morsel of the new album.Live shows spread the name of the band as a great live act, while during the autumn of 2001 the band had an important line up change since Marco Iacampo quit the Elle to start his solo project (Goodmorningboy / Urtovox 2002). Elle wanted to evolve their language from their previous records, so they started adding electronics to their crepuscular pop ballads. They also started singing in english, moving toward something not so far from that 'mittel-european-indietronic' sound everybody knows. The new record titled "People are dancing in the A.M." (January 2003) didn't let down the expectations of their fans. They took part to the popular Italian live festival called TORA! TORA! after the clip shot for the title track got the airplay on MTV
