Hidden amongst the urban redevelopment in the Wynwood Art District, Anthony Spinello converted his one bedroom apartment into the Spinello Gallery. Since 2005, Anthony Spinello has transformed his once two-floor walk up into what is now considered a notable gallery space. Anthony Spinello decided to sell every piece of furniture in his apartment on Craigslist in conquest of filling a void in the Miami art scene.
Opening September 2007, Spinello Gallery has moved out of the apartment and into the new gallery space now located in the heart of the Wynwood Art District. (2294 NW 2nd Avenue).
Spinello Gallery prides itself in exhibiting intelligent works of art in every medium by contemporary local and international emerging artists. Spinello Gallery has become the playground for unorthodox and experimental artists who don’t easily fit into the confines of the traditional gallery space. Spinello Gallery is steadily making headway in the Miami art scene and beyond becoming a contender in the Art World.

Miami, FL, April 25, 2008 - Spinello Gallery is proud to present "In Between Places," the highly anticipated solo exhibition by Miami-based artist, Lee Materazzi. This will be her first solo exhibition at Spinello Gallery. Opening reception is May 10th, 7-10pm.
Identity, environment and circumstance are the driving forces behind this new body of work by Miami based artist Lee Materazzi. Puncturing private inner sanctums with her lens she records intimate, defenseless spaces that marooned in the quiet splendor of her images resonate with vulnerability and personal truth.
Testing the validity of elements commonly used to establish and communicate a sense of self - such as clothes and décor - Materazzi crosses personal boundaries, exposing her subject's soft pink underbellies in the name of her art.
Her models appear nude and powerless; decapitated by surroundings which volunteer as much about their identity as their hidden face withholds.
Informed by a circumference of thought and a natural inclination to disrupt the mundane these images embody a simplicity and purity rarely found in staged photography. By marooning her peculiar creations in a dislocated everyday reality we are able to imagine ourselves in a different light.
Known for encapsulating urban and social topology with an opportunistic flare, Materazzi imbues found elements and chance, everyday settings with a new significance. And in the twilight of satire her prosaic observations take on a profound beauty.

Miami, FL, January 25, 2008 - Spinello Gallery (2294 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami Florida - 33127) is proud to present "Ask Us About Our Free Stabbings," the highly anticipated debut solo exhibition by Fort Lauderdale-based creative genius', Blackbooks, featuring laser cut sculptures, mix media paintings, and installations.
The debut exhibition is comprised of sadistic poetic works deeply rooted in literature. The pioneer master craftsman's sophistically fuse technology, design, vintage pop iconography, written word, and graffiti into mischievous innovative works of art. In "Meadow," an intricate wood cut wall sculpture; the duo creates an abstract lyrical masterpiece, sprawling 12 feet across the gallery. Blackbooks seamlessly merge traditional street "get ups" with entangled circuitry, thus creating exuberant amorphic contemporary landscapes.
According to Blackbooks, "We are the ones that will tuck you in at night. Sometimes we tie your shoelaces together while you catch a catnap. We are the ones that whisper sweet nothings in your ear, like "we should put a bottle rocket in the bean dip." We send you flowers on your most joyous occasions and shed a tear for you when things do not go so well. On occasions, we have been known to attend Barber Shop Quartets, singing soft serenades with a sultry smoothness in some secluded swanky salon. We enjoy Slip n' Slides in your backyard on a hot summer's day. If a big rodent dies, we are definitely going to smell it."
Which concludes why this show is not one to miss.
Blackbooks (Andy Black & Books IIII), were the first to bridge the gap between the laser fabrication method and an already existing contemporary stencil movement. In 2004, the duo changed the face of stencil art with their eponymous design factory: BLACKBOOKSTENCILS. Blackbooks has designed and fabricated custom works for street art legends such as Shepard Fairy, Logan Hicks, Dalek, and Andy Howell (to name a few), as well as for major corporations such as, Puma, Absolute, Red Bull, K-Swiss, Scion, and local advertising giant: Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

Miami, FL, December 26, 2007 - Spinello Gallery (2294 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami Florida - 33127) is proud to present "This may be the last time, I don't know," the first solo exhibition by Miami-based artist, Christina Pettersson, featuring impeccably rendered graphite drawings on paper.
A brick - most minimal of objects, in and of itself hardly an object at all, but a cell for the larger structure it will become. Yet a drawing of brick can be another matter entirely. Lone graphite drawings of bricks, surrounded by a great expanse of white paper flank the walls, telling Pettersson's story of how spirit actually finds its way inside of matter- and how humans tend to it.
These bricks, lovingly taken by Pettersson from famous writer's houses, wrapped in blankets like precious jewels, and carried home, one by one, are like a key which unlocks all cryptic matter and becomes infinite. Pettersson explains, "They are a continual transformation whereby a brick is not a just a brick but the house it belongs to, the writer, the written, the event, the artist/thief, and finally, the artwork. A drawing of a brick represents the second in which the moment actually becomes the object, that is, until the intensity of the drawing finally breaks it, and it returns to being a moment again." Pettersson creates a strange breed of magic, a narrative not unlike phantom-limb syndrome or déjà-vu, which can never be fully explained. All at once, this mere chink in the foundation becomes not only the structure it pre-ports to build but a kind of prophesy of the past, the slow hoarse sound of history that seems to begin before sound itself has started, and ceases long after sound has died away.
On its façade, Pettersson creates an optimistic message, a glimmer contained within these rare artifacts of life that has managed to survive against a sea of history and forgetfulness. The bricks hover in the mind's eye, like a dark star in a white void. Yet how quickly the vast white page begins to assault the viewer, shy but determined, reminding us of how difficult it can be to resurrect the dead. Reminding us of all that is already lost. For in the finale the bricks are sort of a tragedy, that of giants being outlived by small piles of stones, and the queerness of why in the world someone would care to draw them.

Miami, FL, October 1st, 2007 – Spinello Gallery, (2294 NW 2nd Ave., Miami Florida - 33127) is proud to present “Littlest Sister 07,” the smallest art fair in town, playfully commenting on the notion of the “Art Fair” as the viewer ironically steps back into the gallery.
This year, Art Basel Miami Beach finds herself a new sibling. If you're looking to find small diamonds in the rough, look no further. Consisting of 4 scaled down booths (4’ x 8’ in size), Littlest Sister 07 uniquely houses a multi-media exhibition of over 25 of today’s most provocative emerging artists. The miniature art fair features scaled down works of art by artists both local and abroad, curated by Claire Breukel (Independent Curator and Executive Director of Locust Projects, Miami) and Art Fair Organizer (Gallerist), Anthony Spinello. Spinello, explains, “The art world flocks to Miami in December primarily to explore the art fair circuit, to find the next acquisition to their collection. Few come to visit the local galleries. So why not turn the gallery into an art fair and feature some of the most interesting emerging artists under one roof?” Littlest Sister 07 is a fragment of the explosive satellite art fair phenomena; exploring the “booth” as a venue to exhibit and sell art. Breukel explains, "Besides being a charming reinterpretation of an art fair, Littlest Sister's scaled down presentation reinvestigates what one considers as a substantial work of art and toys with the associations of showing artwork at art fairs.”
Now in its 6th season, the effect of Art Basel Miami Beach has spawned 20+ “satellite” art fairs throughout Miami, housing 1100+ galleries and alternative spaces from around the world. Spinello and Breukel have added one more art fair to this line up. However Littlest Sister doesn’t provide the usual.

Miami, FL, September 18th, 2007 – Spinello Gallery, (2294 NW 2nd Ave., Miami Florida - 33127) is proud to present “Little Boxes,” a group exhibition featuring drawings by Michael Bilsborough, photography by Lee Materazzi, paintings by Lou Laurita, and sculptures by Kerry Phillips. Cookie-cutter forms and ticky-tacky rules dictate how we live, think, and believe. Neatly stacked identical floor plans systematically shape our lives, a “Levittown Kingdom.” But, behind closed doors do the demons come out to play? Once you're inside, can you ever get out? When the structure disappears do the remnants live on? Although each artist creates with a different medium, all explore the confines of little boxes; the people who live, play, and die in them.
Drawings of bacchanalian bashes and mysterious rituals, edging on power struggles between the participants are the steady handwork of a New York City emerging talent, Michael Bilsborough. Men and women couples, compete and retreat in episodes of sexual misadventure. These orgies initially thrive on libidinal laxity and appetitive abandon, yet soon crumble under the weight of - Overindulgence? Indolence? Weariness? World-weariness? What we witness is a mixed review of sex, reaching beyond commonplace, one-dimensional views of sex as unconditional pleasure. Fascinated with the identity imbued within objects and their relationship with our own character, It’s with this relationship in mind that Miami based artist, Lee Materazzi, creates assemblages using both objects and willing people whom she finds on the street. This series of photographs explores the history of objects and our relation to them. Gouache paintings depicting meticulously rendered imagery within text are the masterful works of New York City based artist, Lou Laurita. His works are organized around three forms of language: affirmations, positive assertions/declarations, and popular song lyrics. As seen in J-Doe, Laurita’s collaging of the textual (“You Ask Yourself This”) and the visual (A man passed out in the brush) is arranged in an intuitive manner that employs the associative possibilities between visual perception and the interpretation of language. However, Laurita goes beyond challenging the way we seek and understand meaning by focusing on the emotional charge of words and the mystery of representation. In this way, the works act as verbal sledgehammers, creating a lexicon in which ideas such as beauty and brutality are pressed into one. Miami based artist, Kerry Phillips, describes her work as “documentary fiction.” She explains, “Memories are at best unstable. Even as I tell my stories I am keenly aware of their inability to stay the same through tellings. Perceived memories — remade with each remembering — become more dominant than the reality of lived experiences. And instead of clarifying or reinforcing memory, habitual use is causing these images to slowly wear away.”

Miami, FL, August 21st, 2007 – Spinello Gallery has moved out of the apartment and into it’s new home located at 2294 NW 2nd Avenue, in the heart of the Wynwood Art District. On Saturday, September 8th, Spinello Gallery will officially open shop, featuring Miami's "It Girl," Susan Lee-Chun, in her highly anticipated debut solo exhibition, "VERSUS," curated by Anthony Spinello.
Susan Lee-Chun, a performance-based artist, works in an interdisciplinary manner. Her interests in the relationship between identity and place manifest in a body of work that incorporates performance, video, photography, and installations. Fascinated with the power of humor and its capability to grab the attention of a wider audience, Lee-Chun employs a tongue in cheek style to her works. However, the humor is only a façade; beyond the image lies a deeper intensity to the work that explores notions of race and identity politics. Through subtle representations and actions in the work, the artist investigates the pervasive struggles of being classified as an ‘other’, and one’s innate desire to fit in. Lee-Chun confronts this classification by creating interactive works about how her presence and actions can impact and alter the perceptions of the viewing public.
Susan Lee-Chun reveals the prelude and aftermath of her transformation into a comical warrior. This recurring character named Sioux sets out to conquer how the individual perceives reality. The exhibition will feature an interactive performance by the artist during the opening reception on September 8th, 2007 – 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Susan Lee-Chun obtained her BFA from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and MA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited & performed internationally and nationally- Herning Kunstmuseum (Denmark), Vienna Biennale (2006), Pacific Asia Museum (LA), The Moore Space (Miami) and Museum of Contemporary Art (Miami).

Jack Shainman Gallery is pleased to announce Delusive Contentment an exhibition of new works by Miami-based Santiago Rubino. For his first solo exhibition in New York Rubino presents graphite drawings on paper in ornate frames which depict otherworldly wide-eyed young women.
Inspired as much by dreams as by chance encounters with complete strangers, his beautiful creatures with their pensive and melancholy expressions, evoke feelings of love, sadness and longing. Dark-haired figures dominate sparse backgrounds giving the impression of characters alone in the desert or even outer space. Spanning time as well as space, Rubino draws on sepia toned paper and attires his subjects in anything from Victorian dresses to S&M spiked heel black leather boots. These juxtapositions give his works a timeless quality that adds to the eeriness and universality of their appeal.
No matter their attire, the figures are stoically composed; whether they look ahead at the viewer or off into the distance their gaze is of such intensity the viewer can only begin to imagine what memory or daydream consumes them. The black graphite and the restraint Rubino employs to make the drawings reveal a dark undertone to the work that addresses the human capacity for evil and destruction in the face of beauty.
With his artwork, Rubino creates an elaborate cosmology that encapsulates his views on the interconnectivity of individuals throughout history and his belief in karma and an ever-flowing energy through which everything is bound.
Rubino, the 27 year-old, self-taught Argentinean, first known by local police and the admiring public for his exquisite graffiti paintings, is successfully channeling his energies and gaining attention in the art world. This is his first solo exhibition in New York.

(North Miami) - The Museum of Contemporary Art is proud to present the ninth installment of Optic Nerve, the popular annual festival featuring short films and videos by some of the freshest and most innovative artists in South Florida. The films were selected from an open call that resulted in over 60 submissions. Optic Nerve is part of the museum’s ongoing effort to provide new venues for emerging South Florida artists. At the conclusion of the first screening, MOCA Director Bonnie Clearwater will announce which work will be purchased for the museum’s collection, with funds provided by Starbucks Coffee Company.
Optic Nerve IX will be presented at MOCA’s Joan Lehman Building (770 NE 125th Street, North Miami) on Thursday, July 26, at 7 and 9 pm with a reception with the artists at 8 pm.

Optic Nerve IX finalists were selected by a panel comprised Patrick de Bokay, Director of the Miami International Film Festival, Gean Moreno, a noted Miami artist, critic and curator, and Bonnie Clearwater, Executive Director and Chief Curator of MOCA.

For his second solo exhibition with the gallery, Lou Laurita presents fifteen large scale gouache paintings of imagery meticulously rendered within text. As the title suggests, the exhibition is organized around three forms of language found online: personal profiles,affirmations (or positive assertions/declarations,) and popular song lyrics. Imagery includes portraits of drunken couples, small disasters, Victorian botanicals, and coloring book illustrations. His collaging of the textual and the visual is arranged in an intuitive manner that employs the associative possibilities between visual perception and the interpretation of language. However, Laurita goes beyond challenging the way we seek and understand meaning by focusing on the emotional charge of words and the mystery of representation. In this way, the works act as verbal sledgehammers, creating a lexicon in which ideas such as beauty and brutality are pressed into one. Laurita addresses the impetus for the exhibition is a recent statement:
We create profiles of ourselves for various sites on the internet...We can be in control of how we want to be perceived, we can be honest about who we are, or we can indicate what might be bristling under the surface...It’s a blanket of words to crawl under when the reality of that loneliness can bring our stories to a predictable conclusion. So we ask for the physical extremes: to dominate or be dominated, to maintain control or succumb, being completely vulnerable and willing to do whatever it takes to be touched, acknowledged, noticed, included...We ask for love and companionship or maybe just a dinner out and we describe how we’ve been hurt in the past and how empty this culture seems and the impossibility of making a lasting connection. We write the lyrics to our favorite song or the song that best describes how we feel right now or that describes an emotion we can’t put into our own words. And with all that description is an image. A picture of you and your bar friends, of you and a girlfriend drunk, or you at Gay Disney, or your asshole, or your hard on, or you in full leather, or your kitten, or you covered in the semen of a group of men, or you at your brother’s wedding, or a drawing of the type of sex you want to have, or a Victorian botanical, or your favorite painting, or a comic book character. And in many profiles there are affirmations, there is hope, and there is beauty in that longing that connects us. There’s a party going on. The party we sometimes assume we’re not invited to...There’s a party going on and we see images posted of the party that has happened...I am a participant, looking in the mirror and telling myself what I want, trying to make a wish a reality. An affirmation which works with the predictability of a crap shoot in a cyber universe where I pray to be grounded and whole, imagine there’s no heaven, want you to love me forever, and to fuck me as hard as you can, all in the same paragraph.

AGUSTINA WOODGATE . "THE MOBILE HAIRDRESSER" . PERFORMANCE -------------------------- COMING SOON TO A CITY NEAR YOU! --------------------------
A wall on castors, a tiled floor, a salon chair, and a mirror is everything that the Hairdresser, Agustina Woodgate, needs to carry out her nomadic gathering task.
Woodgate sets up shop with her portable salon as she travels around the cities collecting hair. Woodgate explains that her performance “provides direct physical contact, interaction, integration, and confrontation with the local population. Collecting hair is an absolute process of reincarnation: from ‘body waste’ to ‘bio/cultural installation’.”
The Mobile Hairdresser intends to directly interact with the community - A Body contribution. Woodgate’s aim is to receive as much hair donations as possible and reuse it to produce knitted hair sculptures.
The Mobile Hairdresser has already visited New York, Miami, and Puerto Rico, among others, and will soon be in a city near you.

01.18.07 - SPINELLO GALLERY is proud to present “DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL,” the solo exhibition of Colombian artist, SANDRA BERMUDEZ, featuring a body of multi-media works based on the artist’s reflection on popular culture and female societal expectations, curated by ANTHONY SPINELLO.

Sandra Bermudez decks the walls with KING SIZE love trinkets. “WIFE,” “#1 LOVER,” and “DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL,” all proclamations, typically adorned around the necks of women expressing ownership. “BRASS KNUCKLES IN GOLD,” are four abandoned engagement rings purchased at pawnshops. The sculpture is welded together, creating a deadly weapon used for increasing the effect of a blow with a diamond fist. The blinged-out lethal instrument can even be tried on for size. Bermudez also creates freestanding sculptures out of wedding bands, also purchased at pawnshops. The wedding bands are fused on top of each other, exposing disregarded private memories etched within the ring.

In the single channel video “HUSTLE”, Bermudez presents popular culture female characters of her generation. The roughly animated video, set to the tune of the “Hustle,” is exploding with dark haired bombshells, presenting a young girl’s vision of womanhood.

12.20.06 - SPINELLO GALLERY is proud to present “THANK YOU, COME AGAIN,” the debut solo exhibition of the young Tennessee native, HACKWORTH ASHLEY, featuring a series of controversial Celebrity oil paintings and video, curated by ANTHONY SPINELLO.

As Hackworth Ashley started to create his Celebrity series at the Savannah College of Art and Design, the administration sent Hackworth to the disciplinary counselor and threatened to suspend him. Hackworth’s strange and mystical imagery of celebrities sporting powerful rock hard erections with exploding magical rainbows, gems, and dream catchers, ultimately became censored by the painting administration. Hackworth explains, “They locked up the paintings in a closet at the painting building and I couldn’t work on them and Pizza Potter was vandalized. I’ve repaired it as best I can, but the effects of it being defaced are still visible.”

In the painting, Pizza Potter, the wizard floats in deep space with a slice of pizza and a seemingly bloody erection. His legs look severed and a radiant rainbow is conjured by his magic wand. Pizza sauce covers his knees and manhood as if he just had his way with the delectable slice an ode’ to that infamous scene from “American Pie.” And in the painting, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, the child star of the TV sitcom “Home Improvement,” stands amazed by the magic that is coming out of his own genitals creating a dream-catcher. This painting is a fabricated scene from some strange epic art film/porno. He is the lost teen idol, VH1, no drug problem, American teen poster boy who slipped through the cracks. Hackworth explains, “I went to an extremely wealthy boarding school where my dad taught pottery. That’s where I learned to paint in oils for the first time. Anyway, it’s significant because dream-catchers were everywhere because of the hippie out doorsy subculture. I just remember them being this big symbol to me of a lot of the falseness I saw in these extremely wealthy people.”

Hackworth explains, “All these people are in your subconscious, and you don’t really know why. They’re just in these television shows, they’re celebrities, yeah. But celebrities are like symbols of the decay of the individual in society. Who we respect reflects on us. These people I know, but there’s no reason why I know them. There’s almost no worth except for some strange moral that came out of one of their sitcoms or something.“

Now at the age of 27, the Argentinean native once known by local police and the admiring public for his exquisite graffiti paintings on the streets of eerie doe eyed girls, is now gaining credibility amongst the finest collectors. Santiago is now featuring his latest body of nostalgic dream inspired drawings on paper, curated by ANTHONY SPINELLO.

Dreams are an important part of reality and from them Santiago Rubino has received much of his inspiration. Santiago explains, “The subconscious mind can be an amazing tool in learning one's inner passions as well as one's place in the cosmos.” The characters found in his dream world reflect emotions of love and sadness, perhaps for the overwhelming beauty enveloped in the destruction found in the world. As much as the human mind is capable of creating wonderful works of beauty, Santiago believes it is equally capable of hatred and evil. Santiago often looks to history for inspiration as well. He explains, “In the past humanity lived in a world of uniqueness, where nothing was mass-produced and individuality was inevitable. The past can unlock the secrets of ultimate existence, the mysteries of our origins, and the foundations that make us human.”

Santiago’s works convey a unique view of the fascinating dream world that has become very real to him. His works move others to look within and perhaps for a moment lose themselves in his forgotten reality that can be shared by all intimate beings.
