Until May 2008, I spent two years working at night, and living in the same hours of darkness on my nights off. The city has this strange peace in it, when people like me would watch over it while the rest of you slept. Without the crushing crowds, we were free to be in awe of the architecture, the lights, the purity of structure, as wild and organic as it is. But nothing is like the sunrise, when I knew my day was done. The rest of the world wakened from its slumber, starting a new day afresh, gently seeing me off to bed.
I will never take the sun for granted again.
