Jason "MetalKing" Brown of www.friday13thmetal.co.uk said... Next up was 'Heat Ray', this was 1 of so little real metal acts that are pretty new to the metal scene here in Hull and what a decent band they are. Fronted by Chunk 'Hail To England!! - Yes Manowar rule' these 5 guys are good at what they do and Chunk is a great frontman, who certainly does get the crowd going. He could be the next Ozzy, Halford, Eric Adams just for stage presence. Musically this band play Thrash, with some Power Metal elements and True Metal too. Mixing Metallica/Manowar style metal these guys are pretty decent and with the right direction and advice could soon see them supporting more successful acts. If you want to see a local metal band from around here go see 'Heat Ray'
ChrisWPhotography wrote - With another of the bands I had never encountered taking to the stage, I'm getting rid of all the first impressions in my mind. Heat-Ray did not disappoint. With dual guitarists (which had resemblance to James Hetfield and Rob Flynn), Heat-Ray took to the stage, enticing the crowd and involving them with the title song "Heat-Ray". As the Rock and Roll life goes on, accidents always happen. In this case it would be the surprise assault on Chunk (Lead Vocals). Whilst innocently taking a drink of water, a wasp came out of nowhere and stung him on the lip! Poor Chunk! However he carried on performing, as a true star does, finishing the set to an astounding applause.
www.thisisull.com said - From Heat Ray we have what I would describe as old skool fast metal with lots of top and middle end guitar thrills. More classic heavy metal refrains and influences of Motorhead and Metallica were evident. There's a must have metal ballad that breaks out into kick ass mosh laden metal that catches the crowd out. Lead-singer Chunk (who was celebrating his birthday) dedicated a song to a couple who'd just got engaged, called, Welcome ToYour Doom, with a grin.
Silverback of www.hullrockers.co.uk wrote - Went to see Heat-Ray at the Goose n Granite (R.I.P. Trogg) and was treated to an AMAZING gig for the semi finals for battle of the bands. The BAND by a LONG shot last night was Heat-Ray. Now,this was the first time I'd seen them play, and was treated to an awesome set of songs! Granted there were nerves and Chunk's voice was suffering a bit, but the band really did themselves proud! They all looked like they were enjoying themselves and had the crowd on the dance floor headbanging with Chunk himself getting amongst them and giving it loads. All their own material and delivered with POWER! This band totally deserved the win and I hope they win the final on November 7th!
Linda of www.themayfairmallzine.com wrote - Opening up the second days events were Heat-Ray, another band who like Beholder (the previous day's opening act) are a mighty big band with a mighty big sound, with their hearts solidly set of old school metal.
The band's set was as hard as it was metal, with stand out songs like ‘Nightwitch’ and ‘The Last Ride’, a track dedicated to the memory of one of the bands friends who tragically lost his life while taking his motorcycle out for what would be its last ride.
Paul "Chunk" Watling is a massive figure on stage and has the vocals to match, along with brother Neil and the other brother partnership of Mike and Dave Parker, with Chris Best on drums, the band really got Day Two
off to the start all festivals want, big in your face metal that leaves you grinning from ear to ear and wanting more.
