Since bursting on to the UK Hard Dance scene and slaughtering it with some massive vinyl releases in late 2006, SQ aka. Nick Squires, has taken his production to the next level with tracks signed to Impact, Oblivion, Experience, Elevate Whites, and of course his massive remix of K90’s seminal anthem ‘Red Snapper’ ..less. To compliment that, he has recently received airplay on Radio 1, Ministry of Sound Radio and Translation in New Zealand and has had four of his tracks signed to the massive new Elevate compilation series mixed by Phil York and Kevin Energy now on it’s second album. You really couldn’t expect more from a classically trained cellist who plays in the Philharmonic Orchestra to name just one of a few.
All be it a fledgling producer the quality of his production will trick you into thinking he’s been around for years, SQ’s tracks are getting support from the likes of Kevin Energy, K90, Kutski, Bunter, Steve Blake, Phil Reynolds, Trevor Mclachlan, Jason Cortez and basically everyone in his field and have been tried and tested at Gatecrasher, Goodgreef and many top clubs worldwide. Radio 1’s DJ Kutski describes him as
“one of the UK’s rising stars in the Hard Dance scene”
and K90 couldn’t speak higher of him:
“After his superb work remixing ‘Red Snapper’ in 2006 and ‘Ghosts in the Machine’ in 2007, SQ has continued to impress me with a maturity and intelligence in his work that you really don’t see these days. This has simply left me no other choice but to release this man’s music making him only the second artist, other than myself to release on my label Dataless. And wow, I’ve heard some of the new stuff he’s been doing! Look out world, SQ is coming!”. His debut release for Dataless, the signature EP, a much slower affair, showing his tech amd trance attributes, is out now, and has recieved great reviews in all the mags, and is currently in talks for the message to be licensed to a major trance album!
His debut single for Oblivion Recordings, ‘Hypnotising’, has been at no.1 in the Hard Dance charts for a month, and his new addiction EP sat at the top too. His recent PA debut at the Shepherds Bush Empire, with scene legend Phil Reynolds, and MDA and Spherical with Jennie Rix for Logic vs. Innovate was a massive success, no doubt leading to bigger and better things. You may also recognise his name from his recent remix of the Nu Energy classic ‘Waves Of Desire’.
As a former member of Tripezium, he has seen their track ‘Lament’, with a banging SQ remix, snapped up by Real Music USA and with that, support from Paul van Dyk, Christopher Lawrence and John 00 Flemming among others.
Outside of dance music, Nick is a classical cellist, playing regularly in major concert halls with top orchestras the Royal Philharmonic, BBC Concert and English Symphony, world-wide, west end shows (Lion King/ Wicked the Musical) and film music sessions most recently playing on the Da Vinci Code soundtrack. He was recently commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to remix, (for the Pet Shop Boys exhibition), their tracks and perform them live (with live cello), to critical acclaim, and has through that, secured interest from major clubs to perform it again and in a funny twist of events, is NO.37 in the 1000 things to do in london, Time Out special! As well as that he has performed at Elton John’s Summer Ball, at the Queens Jubilee and for Massive Attack and other major bands. SQ uses his classical background to find a new take on trance and Hard Trance and the cello even has found itself in one or two tracks and is used in his massive live PA!
He has also started gigging with the band signed to Polydor/Universal, Jamie Scott and The Town who are on tour all over the world and are currently nominated for best new international act at the danish music awards.
2008 is turning out to be an exciting year, with bookings for his new Live PA, SQ LIVE! , from such brands as Freeformation, Nu Religion, and Dataless, and with high profile remixes for the likes of Wid and Ben, K90 and the Elevate albums, and collaborations with top producers and DJ’s. In the words of hard dance legend k90, "Watch out world, SQ IS coming!"

"International DJ Review...Hypnotising - SQ (OBLIVION RECORDINGS)
SQ aka Nick Squires had a great year last year and stamped his name all over the scene. As a clasically trained cellist, he knows a thing or two aboutmusical progression and it shows in this very classy hard trancer. The chords are spot on, the melody is outstanding and the production is the best yetfrom the scene newcomer. Dave ’Aftershok’ Leigh is on hand to provide the remix, and although it lacks the bite of the original, it’s still a very competent production. Do yourself a favor and hunt down a copy of this - you won’t be disappointed!

"M8 Review...SQ and Fallout - Karma (IMPACT RECORDINGS)
Impact has always been a label to watch as it’s run by two of the scenes top hard trance producers, Phil Reynolds and Steve Blake. Both have always supported new artists coming through and with their latest discovery they’ve hit gold. SQ and Fallout are very fledgling music makers but the quality of their production tricks you into thinking they have been around for years. Their first track ’Karma’ is full on hard trance with a main riff so good i’d wish i’d come up with it myself. I look forward to hearing more from these guys soon! M7/M8

"International DJ Review...Tripezium - Lament (REAL MUSIC USA)
Comprising of singer/songwriter duo Cat and Bex, SQ, and my fellow reviewer Danny Slade, Tripezium offer up a vocal trancer that effectively carries hard house undertones. There aren’t many that know what works on a dancefloor better than Danny boy, and this certainly does the biz! Euphoric riffs compliment the vocals and with a racier SQ mix, it makes for a quality package.

SQ is fast becoming one of the top names to look out for in the hard trance scene. Its only a matter of time until his hard work and dedication see him become one of the major players
