In this day and age of metal bands looking to be the next big thing or trying to find the next new sound, it’s hard to discern the good bands from the bands who are trying too hard. The bands that people tend to follow and support are typically the ones who aren’t looking to fit into some kind of mold but bands whose music flows seamlessly from their hearts thus creating a new sound without even trying. Enter BLACK CHAPEL.
Hailing from Cudahy, CA, Black Chapel was formed in 2002 by lead singer/guitarist Jose P, bass player, Chris C., and drummer, Marco V. Black Chapel’s music had undergone a number of musical styles before the band realized that whatever they tried sounded and felt like everyone else and everything else. Working off of a steady diet of Slayer, Sepultura, Dream Theater and Cannibal Corpse covers, Black Chapel knew their destinies lied elsewhere. The thrash and intensity were there but if used incorrectly, Black Chapel would fall into the depthless realms of mediocre thrash and death metal that so many bands find themselves in.
After the inclusion of keyboardist, Ben P., the band’s sound started to emerge as a force that no one was quite prepared for. With Ben’s eerie keyboards surrounding the band’s already intense thrash sound, the organic growth was almost complete. Each song the band has written, from the dynamic “Alone” to the epic title track, “Sands of Time” to their single, “Frozen”, brings together the band’s influences of thrash and epic progressive metal and fuses it with catchy melodies to create a new hybrid of metal. “Our goal is to create a sound that has room for imagination and vision. Music that in reality has no boundaries,” states drummer Marco V. “When we write, we look for universal topics that people can give their own meaning to, like a tattoo, which reflects our sound,” says lead singer, Jose.
After months of playing shows in the Los Angeles area including The Whisky A-Go-Go, The Knitting Factory, and Key Club and opening up for a variety of bands like Kamelot and Divine Heresy, Black Chapel have honed their live show into a fearless moshfest conquering the progressive and thrash metal audiences. Their powerful live shows have fans head banging, thinking, feeling, and singing along. World renowned metal internet radio station, KNAC.com called the band, “scathing thrash and death metal with progressive elements, and then you have only a limited description of this band’s sound.”
Their tight live shows and original sound have earned them a great deal of accolades including winning the “All Things Digital Hard Rock/Heavy Metal” contest on www.airplaydirect.com including a slot on the Indianapolis Metalfest. The band has also been nominated for Best Keyboards, Best Male Vocals, Best Drums, Best Production, Best melody, Best Potential Movie Soundtrack, and Most Original Band from www.garageband.com as well as play on a number of internet radio stations including www.metalnetradio.com , WLVR 93.1 in Pennsylvania, and ACE Radio Live in Florida.
Call it what you will, progressive thrash, post-thrash, or whatever name you can come up that helps you understand it. No matter how you try to categorize it, Black Chapel have created an epic style of metal music that encompasses a world of brutal intensity and originality. Black Chapel is here.
