About Me

"Atmospheric soundscapes are explored with Calexico-like confidence and a fetching Anglo twist. The planets may be a way away but this is still an impressive lift-off" Uncut

"This cutey-pie duo like to sing about confectionery rodents. Unsurprisingly, there is a sugary, sweet, bubblegum quality to their music. Meet the folk-pop Ting Tings." The Guardian

"'You Can't See The Stars From Here' is a beautiful record better off without the fine tuning - fanciful, youthful, playful, vintage-tinged rural pop." CMU Daily

"The hits just keep on coming on the second half of the album as well, with Lucky Motel, Silver Spoon, Little Victories and the title track You Can’t See The Stars From Here all really top notch. Don’t be surprised if they ‘blow up’ at some point this year, for now though ours and a few thousand others little secret." The Beat Surrender

"Glorious folk pop with an undeniable commercial underbelly. Sugar Mouse is the sound of sunshine being let out of a jar on a rainy day. Wonderful stuff." Music Week

Sugar Mouse is in a movie!
Oh, Atoms came to be in the summer months of 2007. Formed from the ashes of The Feeling Good Conspiracy - a London outfit whose champions included Steve Lamacq at Radio 1 - it is the musical vehicle for one Gwen Atom and one Marc Atom, two multi-instrumentalists who share a musical past as varied as their music is sweet.
Those of you really
paying attention may well recognise Gwen from Psapp , with whom she regularly shares the stage as a permanent member of their touring band. Prior to this her musical history includes time playing live with Menlo Park and live and in the studio with Flotation Toy Warning (for whom she played strings on their debut album). Recently she also contributed violin to the Klima album and sang a track called All Dressed Up In Dreams on DJ Downfall's latest longplayer, Bon Viveur. You can read about it here.

Marc had played in various British bands before relocating to the US where he took his guitar and ever-growing book of songs around the Greyhound route, playing bars and radio stations from LA to Texas via the midwest. After months of this troubadour lifestyle he ended up in Austin, where he formed weird-alt-country outfit Guido Falls and was a regular live singer/songwriter performer as well as session guitarist with bands such as After 909. He also bakes a mean enchillada.

As fate would have it, t'was in Texas where the pair's paths would ultimately cross. Gwen bumped into Marc in Austin's infamous Continental Club during a night off from touring the US with Jose Gonzalez and Psapp. The pair talked... the pair drank... the pair pondered.... and Oh, Atoms was born.

Fast forward twelve months and much has come of that fateful meeting. Armed with a chestful of songs, written together in close collaboration and taking inspiration from 1930s tea dances, victorian darkness, dead film stars, suspicious circumstances and selected confectionery, their music caught the ear of the folk at Sony/ATV who swiftly signed them to a global publishing deal in May last year. The band's debut album is released on 2 February 2009.

A limited edition seven inch single, featuring Sugar Mouse and Let's Go Away, was released on 19 January and is available at Rough Trade. You can also buy it at iTunes and IndieStore.com

Right.... As you were.

nb. guitars, ukes, banjos, violins, pianos, mandolins, keyboards, glocks, dulcimer sticks, lapsteels and percussion, pots, pans and items of fruit are all played by Marc and Gwen.
