Born in 1961, Derek has fostered a passion for art since an early age.
Realising at school that his talents lay in drawing and painting he has
spent his adult years committed to his abilities.Like many artists, Derek has led an unusual life, which includes
extensive travel and homelessness, which has provided him with experiences
from which to draw upon for inspiration. Completely self-taught, he has learnt
that an unconventional approach to painting can often lead to dramatic results.
Derek's strong visual ability and eye for colour enables him to focus initially upon
the main character, with the background reflecting the mood and feeling of the painting.
Much of his earlier work is influenced by Dali, his later pieces reflect a more punk theme.
His work includes nature, architecture and abstract, ranging from oil paintings to murals.Derek's work illustrates much of his charcter;
he seeks enjoyment from other people's interpretation and appreciation which
he has gained through exhibitions. He enjoys experimenting with colour, designs
and where possible he likes to work collaboratively with other artists on murals.Derek's work has culminated in painting large scale murals for a range of organisations
including schools, the YMCA and markets. His murals are noted for their striking colour,
clarity of picture and their ability to create a focused or stimulating backdrop tailored
to enhance their environment.
