Lotus Moon is a New England based bellydance troupe hailing from the mystical shores of southern New Hampshire and Maine. We are an eclectic group of dancers who have been dancing together since the summer of 2004. Lotus Moon performs a unique fusion of Middle Eastern dance blended with contemporary, urban American dance styles giving a modern-day twist to traditional bellydance. Our fusion combines and draws on dances and music from Turkey, Egypt, North Africa, Indian and other Middle Eastern countries celebrating the art form of bellydance interpreted through the modern, urban landscape.
Our goal is to bring the art of bellydance to the general public and raise awareness for the artform through dynamic choreographies and spirited improvisation.
Lotus Moon’s premiere performance was on the full blue moon in the summer of 2004. Matching this to the ancient lotus flower of Egypt bore inception to the group name. Members continue to expand their skills through regular practice, attending workshops, and ongoing classes with teachers Helena Melone and Sabrina Lichtenwalner of Firedance Studios in Kittery, Maine.
Performances are further enhanced by the use of props such as veils, finger cymbals or swords. Whe also use fire props such as fans, poi and candles when appropriate.
