About Me

I am a Composer. Perhaps I am a dilettante. Though I hold no degrees in Music, I have made my way into the world of creation through personal theory and composition studies begun while singing in choirs in high school, college, the University of Miami's Civic Chorale and short stints with the Florida Grand Opera. I taught myself how to play the piano and violin but not to performance level of any competence. In my 30s, I finally studied composition privately with East Indian composer, Salil Sachdev, wherein I acquired a sense of my own voice. That voice runs the gamut from simple, traditional pieces to more untraditional, experimental fare. Now that I leave my 40s and enter my 50s, some say that I have already found a defined voice. I am not so sure. I believe, that a composer may have several voices and styles that while divergent, are still all his/her own. It's a bit remisniscent of Stravinksy's path perhaps. I don't know about that but I do know that this is my path. The possession of more than one mode of expression only means that the composer is constantly searching and does not dismiss all the possibilities that the "infinite variety of music" can offer, but embraces those possibilities. So much music, so little time...

Influences: Everyone...Isn't that the most honest answer we can ever give to such a question. It sounds trite...I know full well what I am saying does sound a bit simple-minded, but whether we like it or not...everyone and everything influences us subliminally.I can feel Albeniz, Alkan, Adam, Adams, Beethoven, Bach, The Beatles, Bartok, Bernstein, The Cure, Casals, Chaminade, Chaplin, Cab Calloway, Delius, Dietrich, Dolby, The Doors, Davis, Enesco, Elgar, Eubie Blake, Falla, Foss, Field, Feldman, Gershwin, Gabrieli, Gibbons, Gluck, Goldmark, Grieg, Handel, Haydn, Hanson, Hindemith, Honneger, Hummel, Holst, Ibert, Ives, Janacek, Joplin, Kuhlau, Korngold, Kabalevsky, Khatchaturian, Lalo, Ligeti, Lees, Liszt, Liadov, Lully, Lutoslawski, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Mascagni, Martinu, Monteverdi, Milhaud, Mussorgsky, Mozart...and on and on...and on down the alphabet...in my head, my music, my soul, my heart.Whether the proof is obvious, is not always evident. An accounting of choices, and gravitations, reveals which directions we did not take as well as which we did.But if you are still looking for a list of my influences, pick up a copy of Grove's Dictionary of Music, The Jazz Encyclopedia, The Encyclopedia of Rock'n'Roll, The History of Cuban Music, etc.
Sounds Like: 50 years old, in love with music, looking for commitment.
