Hoover High graduate Mark Hall, who had recently accepted a scholarship to play basketball at UC Riverside, was killed in a car accident early Saturday morning. Hall, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, was driving westbound on Highway 60 in Moreno Valley just before 2 a.m. when he allegedly swerved to avoid a stalled vehicle. The car rolled, and two of the six passengers, including Hall, were killed. All were reportedly UCR students. Hoover coach Ollie Goulston said the entire Hoover High community is devastated by the loss of Hall, whom he described as a gentleman and a class act. “He made such a big impact on our school, our community and our team,†Goulston said. “(The success he anchored his senior year) really changed the culture at Hoover, and he was a big part of that.†After a junior season in which the Cardinals won just six games, Hall was the senior captain on a Hoover team (24-10) that advanced to the San Diego Section Division II Finals for the first time since 1974. As a high school senior, he averaged 16.8 points and 10.2 rebounds and earned spot on the All-Section Division II team as well as the Union-Tribune All-Academic Team. He signed with Long Beach State out of high school but left and then played at Seward County Community College in Kansas. He had recently transferred to UCR.
