BIOGRAPHY:
Rarely does a simple acoustic project turn into something as ambitious as Oneonta, New York’s THE CAST BEFORE THE BREAK. Main songwriter TJ Foster started the group as an outlet to explore new facets of his music, but with the addition of guitarists Jeremy Carter and Jordan Stewart, bassist John Cannon and drummer/producer Ben Hemingway, a much more developed sound emerged. The tracks on the band’s debut, As Your Shoulders Turn On You, showcase the group’s ability to craft wildly creative, experimental music while at the same time maintaining pop sensibilities. After digging past the obvious comparisons to post-hardcore bands like Thursday and Dredg, a more grandiose sound begins to emerge. The elaborate instrumentation and vocal layering reminiscent of bands like Forgive Durden and The Receiving End of Sirens. The warmth and intimacy seen in artists like Elliott Smith and Dallas Green. The introspective lyrics and sheer force of bands like Death Cab for Cutie and The Spill Canvas.
And how we dance! And how we sing!
With each member pulling from their own unique influences, it’s no surprise how diverse the music sounds. However it remains focused. “I think overall, the main inspiration for us was just writing cohesive songs that were each as powerful as the next, while also containing surprises around every corner,” says vocalist/guitarist TJ Foster. With each member focused on their education, the band’s priority was to present their work and passion to the world in the form of their album, As Your Shoulders Turn On You. Foster sums up the band’s attitude towards music saying, “We poured our hearts and souls into this record… If you can’t afford our CD, burn it from a friend. Music deserves to be heard. And this record, as powerful as we’ve attempted to make it, needs to be shared with the world. We love our fans, and there’s nothing we wouldn’t try and do for them.”
This is far too heavy for a childish thing.
The release itself focuses on the story of a man lying in a coma, barely alive, the seconds counting down until his demise. But digging deeper, one sees a commentary on society and human nature. “…the record is really a statement about society in general. We’re all guilty of something, and I think that’s what this album is pointing out.” The tracks are powerful, taking the listener for an emotional and musical ride that is at times jarring and tough to comprehend on first listen.
What have we all become? What’s lost is found.
With their recent signing to Red Dragon Records and plans to tour in the future, THE CAST BEFORE THE BREAK is truly a unique band, the type that only comes along every few years; a band to keep your eyes on.
