In January 2003, Steven Meloney and long time friend Jeremy Diestel started a band called Frustrated. The band went nowhere until June of 2004, when little brother Matthew Meloney was added on bass guitar. The band name was changed to Knights of Havok. Knights of Havok played many shows in Napa, such as downtown music festivals, and high school functions. However, they remained instrumental until Steven took up vocals in April 2006. By this time, close friend Christopher Paulson had become rhythm guitarist, and the band was now calling itself Aveus. “When we became Aveus everything changed, our style, our ideas, our influences, and our performance.†The band continued to play locally and tied for second place at a Battle of the Bands in town. However performing locally became boring, and so the band ventured out to Orangevale to play another Battle of the Bands at Club Retro.
