The castle has extensive grounds, including a loch, a large and dense forest, called the Forbidden Forest because of the dangerous creatures living there, a number of greenhouses and other outbuildings, and a full-size Quidditch pitch. The castle is surrounded by mountains. The School Year at Hogwarts * Term begins September 1st. Students arrive at the school at Hogsmede Station where 2nd years through 7th years ride horseless carriages, 1st years ride the boats with Hagrid to the castle. The start-of-term feast: The sorting, Dumbledore says a few words, then they eat. * October 31: the Halloween feast. * First Quidditch match in November * Second week of December, McGonagall takes names of the students who are staying over the holidays. * End of term feast is about a week before Christmas. * Christmas feast on December 25. * Soon after January 1st, Hogwarts Express returns and the 2nd term begins * Easter holidays: students are allowed to go home, for how long uncertain, tons of homework that holiday. * Exams are held the third week of June. * End-of-term feast' * All students and staff (except for Filch) leave for summer holidays sometime during the third week of June.Grading and Assessment During their first four years, students need only to pass each of their subjects before advancing to the next level the following year. Regular exams and lessons usually seem to be graded on a numerical scale from 0 (bottom marks) to 100 (full marks) although some students routinely get higher than perfect scores. To qualify as a registered practitioner of magic, students must take the compulsory O.W.L.s examinations in their fifth year, and may proceed to the N.E.W.T. level, a more advanced exam regimen covering fewer subjects but in more depth, in the seventh year.Subjects are graded on the following scale:Passing Grades* O = Outstanding * E = Exceeds Expectations * A = AcceptableFailing Grades* P = Poor * D = Dreadful * T = TrollThe O.W.L.s roughly corresponds to the O-Level (now replaced by GCSE), and the NEWT to the A-level examinations used in the English state school system. Its emblematic animal is the lion and its colours are scarlet and gold. Minerva McGonagall is the most recent Head of House, Rubeus Hagrid is said to be the next. Nearly Headless Nick is the house ghost. The founder of the house is Godric Gryffindor.Hufflepuff Helga Hufflepuff, is the most inclusive among the four houses, valuing hard work and patience and friendship, justice and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members. Its emblematic animal is the badger, and yellow and black are its colours (purple and yellow in the video games.) Professor Pomona Sprout is the head of Hufflepuff. The Fat Friar is its ghost.Ravenclaw Ravenclaw values intelligence, knowledge, and wit. Its emblematic animal is the eagle (raven in the movies), and its colours are blue and bronze(blue and silver in the movies). The Ravenclaw head is Filius Flitwick, the house ghost is the Grey Lady, and the house was founded by Rowena Ravenclaw.Slytherin Like Salazar Slytherin, its founder, Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, determination, and resourcefulness. Its emblematic animal is the serpent, and its colours are green and silver. Severus Snape and Horace Slughorn have been heads of Slytherin. The Bloody Baron is the house ghost.A Time-Turner is a device in the magical world that allows for time travel. I received a Time-Turner from Professor McGonagall in my third year, so I could attend more Hogwarts classes than time would normally allow. McGonagall made me keep the Time-Turner secret, so I coulnd't tell anyone. Not even Harry and Ron. Then, I finally let Harry in on the secret near the end of our third year where Harry and I used the Time-Turner to travel back in time in order to save Sirius Black and Buckbeak. My Time-Turner resembled an hourglass pendant on a necklace. The hourglass pendant would be twisted to move through time, and the number of turns on the hourglass corresponded to the number of hours one traveled back in time.
