Born in Brooklyn NY, Omhmar Griffin began his dance training at the world renowned Fiorello H. Lagaurdia High School for the Performing Arts under the direction of Michelle Mathesius. While still in high school, Omhmar was accepted in and studied at the Joffery Ballet Academy. He spent his high school summers studying with the Academy of the Royal Ballet.Upon graduation he accepted an invitation to join the Washington Ballet in the nation’s capitol. He was soon dancing principal roles before President Bill Clinton on the stage of The Kennedy Center in such productions as Double Contrast, Eclipse, Savannah, and The Nutcracker. He also danced as a soloist in Hansel and Gretel, Allegro Brilliante, Fives, and Birds of Paradise.Shortly thereafter the dancer-singer-actor was quickly hired to join the national touring company of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Performances in George C. Wolfe’s Jelly’s Last Jam and Mike Malone’s Black Nativity followed.Omhmar then returned to the New York world of concert dance and accepted a contract with the American Ballet Theater. There he performed works by Petipa, Nacho Duato, Kenneth McMillan, Anthony Tudor, Peter Martins, and Balanchine. The following season he joined The Metropolitan Opera and performed in Carmen, Sampson and Delilah, Moses and Aaron, and La Traviata.In 1999 Omhmar left New York for Hollywood. Four days after his arrival he was performing with Whitney Houston at the Grammy Awards. Whitney then hired Omhmar for her national tour and later featured him in her landmark videos My Love Is Your Love, I Learned from the Best, and Its Not Right But Its Okay. Moesha then got the word and hired Omhmar, as did The Parkers, and the feature film Boys and Girls. He then joined Lula Washington’s dance company, originating several premiere roles as well as performing many of her classics.In 2000 he formed and presided over O.N.G. Entertainment, a full service live event production company that provided pre-packaged and custom-made entertainment programs for numerous companies, schools and fashion shows throughout the United States. Clients included the West Coast Fashion Summit and Industrials for Nike and DADA sports wear companies.Omhmar Griffin then choreographed the TV pilot Dance Life and produced and choreographed the Stanley Bennett Clay stage musical Looking For God which earned him a 2005 NAACP Theater Award Nomination. Recently Griffin danced in the feature film Dreamgirls, and received critical acclaim for his role of Mr. Mistoffelees in the FCLO production of Cats. Omhmar also performed in this year’s west coast revival of Sophisticated Ladies.Currently Omhmar is the Artistic Director for the Los Angeles Modern and ballet Company. A company he formed along with Robert Gilliam in 2003. Currently the company is working on their newest creation telling the story of Cesar Chavez. Look for the debut of this ballet in 2009.
