I like Mitchener (JAM), but his books can be kind of a chore if you're not in the right mood. My favorite is the Source. I just read Girl with the pearl earing (which seemed nothing like the movie I remembered seeing a few years ago... which I did not like at all), Book of Salt I enjoyed, and now I'm reading England, England (it seemed appropriate) and loving it.
