In this book of searching and passionate verse, Rasshaan L. Bolden and Corey M. Hopps tell the story of our hearts and of the hard streets where those hearts struggle for self-knowledge, love, and personal salvation. Hopps and Bolden are members of the award-winning spoken work performing group, AWOL Inc., performing throughout the Southeast. At the recent Savannah Spoken Word Festival, AWOL was named Best Poetry Group and Corey Hopps was recognized as Best performer.COREY HOPPS, or HOPPS, as he is known in the spoken word scene of Savannah, Georgia has been writing poetry for as long as he could remember. He says, it seems like I have always loved poetry, from when I was a child and read the tales of, Uncle Remus, up until high school and college when you get into Shakespeare, Lord Tennyson, Nikki Giovonni, and Etheridge Knight.Corey identifies his style of poetry as, Southern Realism, in that he says that there is a richness, and uniqueness in the South, even in its cities , that no place else has.Corey lives and works in Savannah, with his wife, Shavin, and two children, Devin and Nyla Rose.As a son of a former thespian, it was only natural that Rasshaan
Bolden, also known as "RASHNL," would follow suit in his footsteps. Growing up in Savannah he was exposed to local plays. In addition to the theatrical arts his parents encouraged him in his natural abilities to draw and later on painting, saxophone lessons, as well as guitar. It wasn't until middle school that Rashnl began writing and soon after hooking up with A.W.O.L. member M.A.F.A.M.A.D.I.X. that he began to rhyme. Poetry was a frontier that he tried to convey through his rhymes but they always seemed too complex in form.Upon attending Morris Brown College where he recieved his B.A. in Mass Media Arts in 2000, would be the first time he ventured out to do spoken word. After being in Atlanta since 1997 Rashnl returned home realigning with A.W.O.L. members Polo, MAF, Hopps, Moses Brown and Balance to reinstate their place in Savannah's poetry scene. As an educator Rashnl believes that through the use of word, riddle with passion, anyones mind, heart and soul can be effected and maybe even changed.
