Bill Turner & Blue Smoke

About Me

The BLUE SMOKE band was founded by guitarist, Bill Turner, and bassist, Eric "The K" Knutsen, who was fresh out of the Army in February 1972, in an attempt to recapture the Country and Rockabilly roots of a "post-Woodstock" music industry so completely dominated by, and lost in a haze of Psychedelic Rock. The band began working almost immediately in local Brooklyn clubs, and began building its reputation gradually but steadily. In the ensuing years, the band developed into a highly polished, professional and widely known nightclub and stage attraction, appearing at fairs, concerts, conventions and all types of public and private events throughout the northeast and even into Canada. The original Blue Smoke band members, in addition to Bill and Eric were: Tony Benson on drums; Jimmy Maloney on guitar; Richie Luca on tenor sax and Steve Robkoff on guitar and lead vocals. Due to personal commitments and school, Jimmy and Steve stayed with the band only a brief period during the band's first year, and for the first several years, the band continued on as a quartette. Through the years to come, the band would use a succession of keyboard players, and utilize female vocalists, pedal steel guitar and a full brass section for many of its larger concerts at outdoor fairs, concerts and conventionsIn 1974 Bill divided his time between Blue Smoke, and a two and a half year stint with Bill Haley & His Comets, playing lead guitar with this inventor of Rock & Roll, a gig which took him around the world. In July of 1996, MTV hired Bill and the group to record the soundtrack music for the four 30 second commercial spots heralding their new M-2 Satellite Network which made its worldwide debut on August 1st of that year. Bill and the band recorded the instrumental "C.C. Rider" chaser heard in each of the spots, which featured a cast of 24 Elvises acting out poses and dancing.Since the late 1970's, Blue Smoke became the 'band of choice' for many of the country's top Elvis Tribute performers, which led to their being discovered by MTV at a convention in Wildwood NJ where they were the backup orchestra for an Elvis Competition which drew over 4,000 in attendance. Soon after this, the band released its first CD "Mississippi Maserati Breakdown" on the independent MANSION RECORDS label.Bill Turner & Blue Smoke won two film industry awards; a 2004 Bronze Telly Award, and a 2005 Platinum Aurora Award, both for "Best Use of Music" in an independent film "The Crusaders", a spy film with a soundtrack heavily laced with retro-surf and jazzy lounge music...a Blue Smoke specialty, and in March 2006, appeared in concert backing up Jim Belushi in a NYC appearance! In October 2007, Bill Turner returned to Germany for the first time in 31 years to officiate at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Rock & Roll Museum in Munich, sponsored by Hydra Records and appeared in concert to a legion of ecstatic fans, sharing the bill with U.K. rocker Mike Berry!Since 1999 Bill Turner & Blue Smoke have been appearing regularly in Atlantic City at Bally's Wild, Wild West Casino.

Here's Bill in action playing electric fiddle in a packed club. Blue Smoke's first single was recorded in 1980 for an independent label, and featured the fiddle Instrumental, "Orange Blossom Special" b/w "Mary Jane". The single was in many of the jukeboxes along the Jersey Shore, and there was a small quantity of these 45's pressed on red vinyl. Today, these red 45's are considered collectors' items!
"Blue Smoke" has been a favorite backup band of all the Elvis Tribute performers in the tri-state area since the mid 70's. Here they are with NJ State Champion Elvis Performer, Mark Reno, in an outdoor concert in the Ship Bottom section of Long Beach Island, NJ.

Influences: The band's musical influences are the sum total of those of the band's individual members and cover a wide variety--perhaps too wide to list, but the band's main musical focus has been between "roots rock" and Americana...with a few commercial excursions here and there.New York based band BILL TURNER & BLUE SMOKE have been creating a rumble in the northeast states for 3 decades.Turner, a former lead guitarist with Bill Haley & His Comets during the mid 70's, along with his red-hot Blue Smoke band derive their inspiration from traditional country and rockabilly, putting their own distinctive spin on the music, effectively creating their own highly individual sound and style.Starting out as a bar band in 1972, they now appear regularly in Atlantic City at Bally's Wild, Wild West Casino as well as throughout the NY, NJ, PA, DE and CT area in nightclubs and outdoor concert dates.Bill Turner is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, dobro, mandolin, fiddle and harmonica on this CD as well as those for other artists. In December 2006 Bill recorded for a Sesame Street DVD project "Kids' Favorite Country Songs", playing 5 string banjo with an uncredited group of studio musicians heard in various parts of the soundtrack; as well as adding jew's harp to Alison Krauss' cameo performance.Bill Turner & Blue Smoke are also heard on MTV playing the soundtrack music on the four commercials for the M-2 satellite network. The band records for Mansion Records, an independent label.

Bill Turner appearing with the Beth Coleman Band in concert. Bill met Beth while they were both appearing on the "WDVR Heartlands Hayride" live radio show broadcast live from the NJ/PA Delaware Valley...and occasionally appears as a guest on her concerts, playing Dobro, Fiddle, or 5 string banjo. Bill Turner has had a long involvement in Bluegrass music, and has appeared on stage playing Dobro with Uncle Steve Crockett & His Log Cabin Boys on the Grand Ole Opry 5 times; as well as several guest spots with Rhonda Vincent, among others. For info on the "WDVR Heartlands Hayride" visit www.wdvrfm.org.
Sounds Like: Turbo-charged Americana...
