At the age of 15, Patrick immigrated to the United States from Ireland with his older brother Darren and his mother Kelsey McClellan. Their mother brought her two sons to the USA to get them away from their abusive, drunken father, Erin McClellan. He was well known to get into fights with anyone, even his two sons. Now Kelsey was a kind a loving mother who tried to instill good values to her handsome sons, but it was clear to her that her husband would undo all the good she had put into her boys. The only choice she had was to get them away from him, as far as possible. So she did the only thing she could do and, with the help of her family, the three boarded a ship and sailed away to a new life. On the ship it was decided that if anyone asked about their father or her husband the three of them would say he was lost at sea.
Life in the United States was a lot more difficult than Kelsey first thought it would be. In order to make ends meet for her family she sold herself on the streets. The first man who came up to her was very handsome, tall and had a strong face. She blushed as he introduced himself as Christopher Angel. He was her angel and it was love at first sight for the both of them. He knew she did not belong on the streets so he invited her and her sons to join him in the Hawkins Brothers Great American Traveling Circus in which he performed in. Sure it was not a real home, but it was a home to her and thats all that mattered to her. Patrick and Darren took the circus life like ducks to water. They did odd jobs and also came up with a clown act. Their mother made and mended all the costumes for the circus, paying very close attention to Christophers costume, who by the way was a traipse artist. Very soon the two lovers found themselves married to each other, but she never told Christopher about Erin McClellan, who she was still legally married to in Ireland.
Her and her two sons took his name and they became know as the Angel family. Now being part of the Angel Family also meant you were now part of the act as well. Patrick and Darren were trained by Christopher himself. Patrick impressed Christopher with his flexibility and quick reflexes, Darren said it come from years of dogging blows. Within a short amount of time the boys were part of the act. And part of the initiation was to get tattoos on their backs that matched their auburn/red hair. Their mother was against it at first. Well, she tried to be at least. She had to admit to herself, the tattoos of the blonde wings on the strong backs of her new husband drove her crazy! It was only later, when Professor P.J. Rutherfords Side Show of Freaks and Human Oddities of the World joined the Circus and Patrick met The Poison Kid and an unlikely friendship developed and it was quiet an adventure.
It was Jack who gave Patrick his nickname, Knives. You see, Patricks brother was shot by a drunken cowboy. Patrick was about to quit the Circus, but Jack gave him a set of throwing Knives and a hidden talent was discovered
