i-VTEC - intelligent Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control. This is a combination of both the VTEC and the VTC technologies - in other words, i-VTEC = VTEC + VTC. Currently, the only engines that use the i-VTEC system are the DOHC K-series engines. . img src="http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m176/Honda-pro69/k.j pg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video ana-pro69/0511it_vtec02_z.jpg[/IMG]
VTEC - Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control. At low RPM, a VTEC engine uses a normal cam profile to retain a smooth idle, good fuel economy, and good low-end power delivery. The VTEC mechanism engages a high-lift, long-duration "race" cam profile at a set RPM value (i.e., ~5500RPM on the B16A) to increase high-end power delivery. There are two major parts of the Variable Valve Timing (VTEC) system. The VTEC Pressure Switch and the VTEC Solenoid. The VTEC Solenoid opens and closes an oil passage leading to the rocker arm assembly, allowing engine oil to pressurize the locking pins in the intake rocker arms. The VTEC Pressure Switch signals the Engine Control Module (ECM ) when the VTEC system has applied oil pressure to the rocker arm assembly, engaging the secondary cam rocker arms.If there are metal shavings inside the VTEC Pressure Switch, either the switch has self-destructed or they came from somewhere else in the engine..
