Bio/General Info:
Formed in 2002 and based in Auckland, New Zealand, underground stars The Midnights represent live reggae at its raw and exciting best.
Built around a core group of four talented musicians (Leo Horgan- Guitar/Vocals, Tobias Wright- Bass, Chris Varnham- Nord/Melodica/Sampler and Berin Hunter- Drums) The Midnights have developed an original reggae sound rich in lyric and infused with a hypnotic blend of roots, psychedelic soul, jazz, rock and rhythm & blues.
The Midnights specialty is their live show, which is renowned for tightness, energy and improvisation. The group intersperse their more direct soul reggae songs with adventurous fusions that flex and reinterpret the genre with wild dashes of horns, improvised harmonies and raw rhythmic workouts that leave every crowd bathed in a satisfied glow.
The Midnights have quickly built a strong following around New Zealand and shared the stage with the best of the country's reggae and roots groups. The Midnights have also supported International artists including UB40, The Wailers, Third World, Big Youth, Arrested Develoopment, The legendary Skatalites and Maxi Priest.
The Midnights show dates include spots at the Raggamuffin Reggae Festival, the Parihaka Peace Festival, Alpine Unity Festival, Raglan Reggae Soundsplash, The Cuba St Carnival, Grey Lynn Park Festival, Fleet FM Soundclash, The Way Out West Fest, The Turnaround and many university orientation events around the country. The Midnights have also toured extensively- bringing their original roots sound to every corner of Aotearoa.
Although the group are yet to release an official album, early Midnights Music has appeared on the Grey Lynn Park Compilation, Conscious Roots 2 and 3, Maori Television (where the group has played live 5 times- favourites!) and the Bfm Live to Air Cd. The Midnights have enjoyed heaps of airtime on radio stations around the country and in Australia and have been featured on the Coast Show (Maori TV), Basslines, NZ Musician, Bfm, Base FM, Fleet FM, George FM and Radioactive to name a few.
The Midnights are currently working on their debut album- due for release soon- 'You think it's the end- but it's just the beginning'
