Convivial Hermit Magazine

About Me

Art, above all teachers, allows people to enjoy life.
- Aristotle
Convivial Hermit Magazine is a project I began back in 2003 after feeling increasingly disenchanted with the commercialism and shallow tastes of the various magazines I had been reading and writing in over the years. In contrast to the many publications I have written in previously, such as Metal Curse, Ad Arma!, Negura, Oskorei, Unrestrained!, Erebus, Qvadrivivm, Metalworks, Brutallica, Juggernaut and others, Convivial Hermit Magazine is entirely my own creation - from the writing to the art to the photography to the final layout.
The 4th issue is available as of September 5th, 2008. It's pro-printed, perfect-bound with a thick, color cover and 116 pages. Contained are 30 in-depth exclusive interviews, 150 reviews, comics, art and five articles. Interviewed are:
SEPTIC FLESH (Gre) • EQUINOX OV THE GODS (Swe) • GEIST (Ger) • NAZXUL (Oz) • NEUN WELTEN (Ger) • JEFF PEARCE (USA) • DIADEMA TRISTIS (Arg) • GOREFEST (Hol) • INTESTINE BAALISM (Jap) • NERLICH (Fin) • MOURNFUL CONGREGATION (Oz) • LONGING FOR DAWN (Can) • MALIGNANT RECORDS (USA) • STROM.EC (Fin) • MARK RIDDICK (USA) • AUSTERE (Oz) • CALIGINOUS (Can) • FEN HOLLEN (Oz) • KERBENOK (Ger) • THE PAGAN HERALD MAGAZINE (Nor) • LOREN NERELL (USA) • DEFEKTRO (Oz) • HEATHEN HARVEST WEBZINE (USA) • DAN SEAGRAVE (Eng) • KATAPLEXIA (Fin) • FORTERESSE (Can) • ETHEREAL WOODS (Eng) • SORG INNKALLELSE (Ira) • FJALLSTORM/NATHE-YAH (Fra) • ARYAN ART (Bul)
Starting January 1st, 2009, all orders will also include a bonus hand-made "addendum", printed separately from the magazine and featuring 32 additional pages of interview questions and last-minute reviews, making a total of almost 150 pages of material, AND, for a limited time, a bonus 80 minute CD-R containing 15 bands from the issue!

Praise for the 4th issue:
I can't think of a single magazine in the underground that can compete with this...absolutely fantastic... - Umesh Amtey (Brown Jenkins)
I was blown away by the look and quality. Great writing as well. Amazing job! - Marty (Worm Gear Distro/Magazine)
You kicked ass with the issue this time, looks top notch - Eric (Runic Records)
Fukn WOW! ...beautiful and in-depth to the extreme... - Nathan Birk (Listenable Records)
Your parcel brought an instant smile on my face... you really make a herculean effort to get inside both the music and the magazines. I am immensely impressed... - Geoff Birchenall (Asgard Root)
It's an amazing publication! Nice work! - Mark Riddick
It reads again very well and has some very interesting new bands/things in it - Marten (Neun Welten)
...the magazine looks great, 'feels' weighty such as how one would judge a well portioned steak, and exudes an unpolluted and untamed projection of a 'culture' C.H. represents. - Acrimonia (Caliginous)
Well impressed with it, the whole thing looks great. The addendum is a really nice, ehm, addendum. Very interesting read. - Frank Harthoorn (Gorefest)
Well done, like all-time! I have just read some interviews, but i am pleased already. - Stefan (Kerbenok)
Great Magazine. - Thor (Morkeskye Magazine)
I think you can not top this with the next issue, it's perfect! - R.U. (Ulfsdalir)
An incredible job! - O.T. (Akitsa)
A fantastic issue. - Rob (Ars Magna Recordings)
I was the whole weekend enjoying the wonderful work you made, your magazine... is really incredible!!!. - Alejandro (Diadema Tristis)
A really great layout and there are some interesting bands. I will enjoy reading it. - Mark Britton (Ethereal Woods)
It's really great and professional looking! Great design and artwork! In two words - killer zine! Maybe I'll say too big [a] word, but to be honest, this is the most professional (but in the same time, not fancy and fashionable), good looking, varied and interesting zine that got in my hands through all my life! - Alexander (Aryan Art)
What a MASSIVE issue it is!!! it really looks great and there's some great material in there thats for sure, you have done a great job here. - Desolate (Austere)
It looks beautiful!! [The Merzbow comic] is fantastic, I laughed so much!! When would you release that in book form?? - Hirofumi Uchino (Defektro)
It's a really great work! - Makoto (Weird Truth Productions)
You have created one quality, and unique Magazine! - Mick (Fen Hollen)
So many magazines are filled with reviews that leave one wondering if the reviewer even listened to the release in question. It was obvious that you gave each review a lot of consideration, and weren't just trying to fill space. I've liked the reviews quite a bit, [and] the Merzbow comics were quite cute. - Adrienne Harvey (Maelstrom Studio Lab)
Wonderful and huge magazine. Intelligent interviews and reflections, great reviews, etc. Best underground mag out there. - Moribond (Forteresse)
This issue came out very well, good work! - Andy (Rusty Axe Records)
It's most impressive and has that epic feel of 90's Slayer Mags, just with better design, interviews and diversity. - Adrian (Mournful Congregation)
A grand piece of work! - Mikko (Qvadrivivm Magazine)
Man, what a colossal work... I am impressed by your efforts, by all means, this is again a big step forward.- Loki (The Pagan Herald)
It's great and has a wonderful design. I enjoyed it so much... in my point of view your work is the best for being familiar with underground bands. - Sadsoul (Sorg Innkallelse)
It looks really good, you have got quite a lot of stuff there. - Miikka (Nerlich)
Damn have you outdone yourself once again. Fucking fantastic. - Todd (God Is Myth Records)
The lay out was impressive as well as the print. I was, of course, aware of the intelligent and ambitious interviews but - and I blame my ignorance for this - I really didn’t expect this to be manifested on the whole magazine! - Fredrik (Equinox ov the Gods)
Very, very good... one of the best zines I've seen in a long time - Robert (Valse Sinistre Productions)
My first impressions are great, congratulations again! - Karsten (Throndt)
An amazing job! - Aaron (Nechochwen)
I love your magazine. - Jeff (Stronghold Records)
Your magazine is amazing, much respect for putting it together. - Nathanael (Musk Ox)
Very impressive job you've done here... your best issue yet! - Karl (Fall of Nature Records)
I'm quite impressed with the quality of Convivial Hermit... Keep up the good work. - Ben West (Oaken Throne)
All back issues are currently sold out.
