Trombonist Garett Arrowood is in the forefront of Miami's young freelance musicians. He is currently pursuing his Masters of Music degree in Studio Music & Jazz Instrumental Performance at the University of Miami. As a performer and composer his specialty is jazz but his artistry is enhanced by an uncommon experience in the traditions of both western orchestral and wind chamber music.Prior to Miami, Mr. Arrowood worked as a freelance musician in greater Chicago where he ‘gigged’ throughout the Windy City and maintained a private studio. For three years he played trombone, sang backup and was co-leader in an R&B funk cover band; in early ‘07 he traveled throughout the United States as the trombonist with the 1st National Broadway Revival Tour of Leonard Bernstein’s Wonderful Town.In 2006 Garett's performance with the acclaimed Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble drew unsolicited praise from seasoned musicians at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New York City. "A terrific talent;" "fiery lead trombone work & excellent soloing;" "good bebop chops;" and simply "sensational" were among his jazz elders' accolades.Garett’s playing also attracted noteworthy attention in South America when he held the solo trombone chair in the Jazz Perú Orchestra '05 led by Maria Schneider at the week long Festival Jazz en Lima; fellow band members included Ingrid Jensen, Geoffrey Keezer, John Thomas, Billy Kerr and Jon Wikan. For two seasons he was a musician with Carnival Cruise Lines playing trombone in show bands that traveled in the Caribbean, Central America & Mexico.Mr. Arrowood is a graduate of Northern Illinois University where he earned the Bachelor of Music Degree in jazz studies and trombone performance. During his two years at 'Northern' Garett played lead trombone in the "World Renowned" NIU Jazz Ensemble. In that capacity he toured with such jazz luminaries as Charles McPherson, Conrad Herwig, Rodney Whitaker, Eddie Henderson, Donald Harrison, Willie Pickins, Art Davis and Claudio Roditti. As a student musician Garett was a member of the celebrated Liberace Jazztet. He was principal trombone in the NIU Philharmonic Orchestra and while still an undergraduate he held the tenor trombone position in the Graduate Brass Quintet for three terms.Mr. Arrowood is an ardent proponent of music education. For two summers [’06 & ‘07] he has been Assistant Director for Chicago’s South Shore Youth Jazz Ensemble under the leadership of its founder, IAJE vice-president Ronald Carter. As an undergraduate student Garett served as President of NIU's International Association of Jazz Educators student chapter. He taught trombone privately, tutored jazz theory and coached student chamber ensembles in the public schools. Garett has also served as a teaching assistant for Birch Creek Music Center's Jazz Session. Prior to his formal jazz studies at Northern Illinois, Garett studied 'classical' music and music education at the University of Minnesota -Twin Cities.Myspace Backgrounds
