The Dialogue are focused on pressing forward without the burden of a
trend, without the saccharine dripping from the inputs, and without
anything but an earnest art.
Growing up in Baltimore, The Dialogue spent their formative years as
Boy Crazy, an instrumental guitar pop outfit that found a comfy niche
in the suburban pop-punk scene. Several reincarnations and
experimental projects later, guitarist Brian Pollack, drummer Jordan
Goodman and bassist Justin Goodman found direct inspiration in bands
like Muse, Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead. But, being now veterans of
makin' and breakin' pop music, they wanted to create a hybrid that
could serve as a middle line - digestible enough for the fans of The
All American Rejects or Jacks Mannequin, but complex and genuine
enough for the fans of Kings of Leon or Death Cab for Cutie. There was
just one problem: they did not have a singer.
They had met several times as peers in Baltimore music. Drew Shaffer
was playing around town as a singer-songwriter, and The Dialogue
needed a vocalist. It took an audition and a vocal lesson for the band
to be convinced, but the pieces fell into place in perfect romance.
Drew lends his hand lyrically and on guitar, but it's his emotional
connection to the music that creates the feel and tone of The
Dialogues distinguished indie/pop/rock: "I'm not always good at
communicating my thoughts or feelings across. I feel like my songs are
my voice. They are my way of getting all these things that are unclear
out. My way of making sense of the world."
The band's debut record is a seven song EP, titled All I Thought
Impossible. It's the first major milestone of what the band hopes and
insists will be the first of many. "It's a tangible dream," Justin
says. "Everything is in our power, we just need to reach out and grab
it ". The band plans to tour during the summer months, going full
force and making this music - The Dialogue - the crucial priority.
Justin explained it best when he said "We want to write great music,
have people understand where we come from and have longevity in this
fickle business."
