This 5 member group's got deep roots. Billy Steaks and G Bone have been knowing each other since knee-high, sproutin from the same turf in Compton. Jay Dogg is from Compton too, but while Steaks and Bone were crippin, he was grownin up with bloods. Merk got his hustlin game from Watts. Tinigi Starr, on the other hand, is originally from San Bernardino. Steaks hooked up Jay Dogg and Merk through his cousin Bay Leaf in the late 80s. In the early 90s, through the leadership of a couple cats called Blue Rag and Big A and through the production of "Niggas in the Garage," Steaks and Bay Leaf formed a rap group called Mixed Nuts, which kicked up dust from the Roxy to the House of Blues in Hollywood. Around the same time, G Bone was doin Bangin on Wax and Starr was sharpenin her singin and song writin skills through countless performances and spots with local artists. Steaks left Mixed Nuts, bangin and wild livin in general to set out on a spritual journey. Merk and Jay Dogg filled the void by joining the group and with Bay Leaf, puttin it down hard throughout the 90s. After some solo projects and other collaborations, around the beginnin of 2005, Steaks, Jay Dogg and Merk decided to form another group. They were gonna call it Mixed Nuts, but after Steaks recruited G Bone and Jay Dogg brought Starr on board, they realized that they needed a new identity. Steak's wife came up with the name Grown Folk, which was perfect because they had all grown up. They had kids, house notes, jobs, relationship issues... It was no longer about who was the hardest or who had the most money. These truths came out in the their first recordings so clearly, it was only right that their name reflect their new reality and what they hope to bring to Hip Hop.
