About Me

Treehouse Shakers

Awarded, “Best of Manhattan” by New York Press , Treehouse Shakers, Inc., a non-profit dance and theater company, was co-founded in 1997 by lifetime friends Mara McEwin writer/actor/director & Emily Bunning choreographer/dancer/producer www.treehouseshakers.com in NYC. We make true to form original Dance-Theater, melding both creative worlds simultaneously. Rebecca Longworth of Offoffoffbroadway.com wrote of our work, “Emily and Mara create dance-theater that can legitimately call itself both. They are artists who clearly cherish the fullness of their hybrid medium as well as their own friendship and collaboration.”
Since our inception we have created and performed works for adults and children in many established performance venues, as well as schools, theaters and community centers throughout the nation. In 1999 we created our first work for young audiences, Flying Through Rainbows, which premiered in New York City at the Nino Nada festival. Flying Through Rainbows was featured in the New York Times to a rave review. Since that time we have created five works for young audiences. Currently, three of our original shows are on a rotating tour for young audiences including; Coyote's Dance, Animal Rhythms & Desert Travels. All three shows integrate theater, modern dance and live music and received reviews in Time Out New York, New York Press, New York Family, Big Apple Parent and more. Laurel Graeber of The New York Times raved about Coyote's Dance, " In the captivating Coyote's Dance, an interactive spectacle, the proud. clever coyote of Indian legend, is being imaginatively reincarnated by the Treehouse Shakers."
This past June we premiered our original adult dance-play, Lost Arroyos, at HERE Arts Center, NYC. Lost Arroyos , follows several characters as they explore class struggles, race boundaries and blurred identities woven within the American cultural tapestry. We are currently booking 2008-2009 tour dates with Lost Arroyos for both adult and mature teen audiences. Lost Arroyos marks our tenth original dance-play premiere.
Treehouse Shakers was named for the wonders of nature, the power of imagination and the excitement of dance. The treehouse, like the theater, is a sacred space where imagination is the most potent currency and stories are the roots of the world.
