Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (March 6, 1475 February 18, 1564), commonly known as Michelangelo, was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect and poet. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and fellow Florentine Leonardo da Vinci.Michelangelo's output in every field during his long life was prodigious; when the sheer volume of correspondence, sketches and reminiscences that survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century. Two of his best-known works, the Pietà and the David, were sculpted in his late twenties to early thirties. Despite his low opinion of painting, Michelangelo also created two of the most influential fresco paintings in the history of Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgement on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Later in life he designed the dome of St Peter's Basilica in the same city and revolutionised classical architecture with his invention of the giant order of pilasters.Uniquely for a Renaissance artist, two biographies were published of Michelangelo during his own lifetime. One of them, by Giorgio Vasari, proposed that he was the pinnacle of all artistic achievement since the beginning of the Renaissance, a viewpoint that continued to have currency in art history for centuries. In his lifetime he was also often called Il Divino ("the divine one"), an appropriate sobriquet given his intense spirituality. One of the qualities most admired by his contemporaries was his, a sense of awe-inspiring grandeur, and it was the attempts of subsequent artists to imitate Michelangelo's impassioned and highly personal style that resulted in the next major movement in Western art after the High Renaissance, Mannerism...........................

Missing aviator and adventurer Steve Fossett was honored in absentia Friday night at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum's 2007 Spreading Wings Gala.
"We want to go ahead and honor Steve Fossett for what he represents: the spirit of adventure in all of us," said Greg Anderson, the museum's president.Fossett's wife, Peggy Fossett, accepted the Spreading Wings Award on his behalf."Steve and I love Colorado, so it is especially nice to celebrate his accomplishments in a place we call home," she said in a written statement before the ceremony. "I would like to thank Wings Over the Rockies and our many friends throughout aviation and Colorado for celebrating Steve's love for aviation and adventure. Thank you (for) sharing his passion for spreading wings."This is the fifth year the award has been given by the museum. It is awarded to a person who has made accomplishments in aviation and also inspires and educates young people. Past recipients include Burt Rutan, who designed the record- breaking plane Voyager, and Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to fly faster than sound.Fossett, 63, was reported missing Sept. 3 after he failed to return from a flight over the Nevada desert, and has not been found. He is known for making the first solo balloon flight around the world in 2002, and the first solo nonstop global airplane flight in 2005.Dick Rutan, one of the co-chairs of the 2007 Spreading Wings Gala, was among the many pilots who participated in the initial search for Fossett after he disappeared."There was no trace, nothing," Rutan said Friday. "How he was able to go on a little plane, fly out and totally disappear, remains a singular mystery to all of us. It was a very sad thing."The Civil Air Patrol in Nevada formally suspended its search for Fossett on Oct. 2, but a privately funded effort continues.CHICAGO, Nov. 26 -- The wife of millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett, who disappeared while flying his plane in September in rugged Western terrain, asked a court Monday to declare him legally dead.
"As painful as it is for Mrs. Fossett, other members of the family and his many friends, it is time to initiate this process," lawyer Michael A. LoVallo said.
The request, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, was a step toward resolving the legal status of Fossett's estate. Court papers describe the estate as "vast, surpassing eight figures in liquid assets, various entities and real estate."
Fossett, 63, disappeared Sept. 3 after taking off in a single-engine plane from an airstrip near Yerington, Nev., heading toward Bishop, Calif.
According to the petition, filed on behalf of Peggy V. Fossett, Steve Fossett was on a pleasure flight.
